Ale Nunez had the virtual band in the form of a mural and also live Eric Liang on piano and Vlad Redžić (NYC) on guitar. Just turned 24 (b. 2001), Alejandra Nuñez is a young musician from Toronto, who finished Humber College music degree program. She performs quite often now. She sings swing era standards with her band. La Rev is a Mexican restaurant and music club. Ale has a wonderful, rich tone, but despite her Spanish name, sings only in English. Vlad Redžić is making his name in NYC, but for some reason, he is often in Toronto, when Alejandra sings.
I posted another Ale's photo almost exactly 2 years ago, but I have heard her quite often in between. The mural is by Israel Noya.

Publiqué otra foto de Ale hace casi exactamente dos años, pero la he escuchado bastante entretanto.

WHITE-TAILED HILLSTAR Urochroa bougueri. This White-tailed Hillstar was observed hovering on the east slope of the Andes in northern Ecuador at 2:53 PM on March 11, 2025.
The White-tailed Hillstar is a member of the hummingbird family Trochilidae.
There has been an unjustified split ot the eastern subspecies Urochroa bougueri leucura and western subspecies Urochroa bougueri bougueri into two separate species.
Ridgely and Greenfield on page 273 in The Birds of Ecuador, Field Guide 2001 state that in the western subspecies there is a "prominent rufous malar area" and that the eastern subspecies is lacking the rufous malar.
Ridgely and Greenfield on page 366 in The Birds of Ecuador, Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy 2001 discuss the two subspecies and suggest that if in the future new convincing evidence were to be established of reproductive isolating mechanisms preventing gene flow between the two subspecies in the event they were to come into contact, the two subspecies might prove to be two distinct species: U. bougueri (Rufous-gaped Hillstar) [the western subspecies] and U. leucura (White-tailed Hillstar) [the eastern subspecies].
The South American Classification Committee of the American Ornithological Society decided in a unanimous vote to split Urochroa bougueri into two species based largely on the supposed "fact" that only the western subspecies has a prominent rufous malar area, while supposedly the eastern subspecies lacks this rufous malar.
AS YOU CAN EASILY OBSERVE, THE EASTERN SUBSPECIES LIVE BIRD IN THE PHOTO ABOVE HAS A VERY PROMINENT RUFOUS MALAR AREA. This undercuts the South American Classification Committee's decision to split this species. Obviously the eastern subspecies exhibits a polymorphism in the presence or absence of a rufous malar area. The bird above is an example of the rufous malar morph.
The problem appears to have arisen from the (perhaps exclusive) use of museum specimens combined with a total lack of or insufficient field observation. The eastern museum specimens were obviously the morph lacking the rufous malar area.
When taxonomic decisions at the species level are based on museum specimen collections that are small and unrepresentative of the natural populations and this is combined with little of no field work, erroneous decisions may be reached.
Una Estrella Coliblanca Urochroa bougueri se observó cerniendose en una selva en las cuestas orientales de los Andes en el norte de Ecuador a las 2 y 53 de la tarde el 11 de marzo de 2025.

BOOTED RACKET-TAIL (hummingbird) Ocreatus underwoodii. A male Booted Racket-tail with fine buff boots is hovering in the light of an orange sunset on the lower east slopes of the Andes in northern Ecuador at 6 PM on March 9, 2025.
The Booted Racket-tail is a member of the hummingbird family Trochilidae. There is considerable disagreement regarding the taxonomy and common name of this hummingbird. Ridgely and Greenfield on page 378 in The Birds of Ecuador, Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy 2001 state that in the future the western and eastern races of the species Booted Racket-tail "may prove to be representatives of two distinct species, O. underwoodii (White-booted Racket-tail) [the western race] and O. addae (Buff-booted Racket-tail) [the eastern race]".
Some people currently refer to the eastern race as a species named Peruvian Racket-tail Ocreatus peruanus.
However, the South American Classification Committee of the American Ornithological Society in January 2024 rejected a proposal to split Ocreatus underwoodii into two species by a vote of 5 against versus 3 in favor owing to the lack of sufficient data at the current time to support such a split.

With the DDA laws bringing to an end the use of their open top Bristol VRs which have for many years given fine service on their 100 service between Totnes-Paignton & Torquay a more modern low floor replacement had to be sought and they are in the form of a pair of former London General Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs, Y812TGH & Y827TGH. Over the Winter period the pair have been converted from dual-door closed tops to single front entrance open toppers. Y812TGH being the only one of the 4 President bodied B7TLs, Y808/12/16/27TGH, to not have enter service for RRL in closed top format.
Pictured whilst on a test run prior to hopefully entering service in very near future, Y812TGH sits in the center of Totnes, whilst non converted closed top sister bus, Y816TGH, arrives to work a 100 service to Paignton.

The first of Rail River Link's Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs to arrived back in Devon from conversion to open top format happened this afternoon as Y812TGH returned, minus roof & center door, to Churston, where it will now be painted into full company livery. Along with Y827TGH it will replace the company's open top Bristol VRs which have until now run the summer 100 service Totnes-Paignton-Torquay.

A busy Totnes Steamer Quay sees Bristol VR, VDV138S and ex London General PVLs, 208, 227, Y808/27TGH. The VR had just returned from it monthly testing and was waiting to replace one of the Volvo and enter service on it's usual 100 diagram. After all, on a fine afternoon what could be better than an open top VR ride, especially on their final season of service!

Rewinding back to last August and to Totnes Steamer Quay where to the left we see the rear of Y812TGH, which was on a break during a test run prior to it being sent away for conversion to open top layout. Unlike the rest of the batch of Plaxton President bodied B7TLs acquired by Rail River Link from Plymouth Citybus, regs Y808/16/27TGH, Y812TGH was not re-painted out of Plymouth colours as it was not required for public service whilst in closed top format. Now both converted to open top Y812TGH along with Y827TGH will from next summer replace the 2 buses pictured to the right of this image, Bristol VRs VDV138S & UWV614S, on route 100 Totnes-Paignton.
However t is hoped that both the VRs seen here, now both in preservation, will see service again this year in Devon, operating for Mendip Mule on their tour.

Just in case you're starting to think I only take buses from before I was born something more modern! Although in my eyes already starting to look a bit of a modern classic, the Plaxton President, represented here by Rail River Link's Volvo B7TL, Y808TGH, snapped out in some of Devon's classic rolling countryside at Longcombe, bound for Paignton on route 100. The route is currently usually being run by the company's open top Bristol VR, UWV614S, can't think where it could have been........ ;-)
