I wasn't a fan of Astana. It's a purpose-built capital city so doesn't have the history and natural culture that other cities have. I visited purely because it was the most convenient flight home, and it gave me an excuse for another long, overnight train journey from Almaty (and I love the long train journeys through this part of the world). But after the scorching cities of Uzbekistan and the beauty of southern Kazakhstan, walking around a freezing cold and fairly empty Astana was not that much fun.

The old north-western part of Astana doesn't remind of the pompous capital with withered apartment blocks standing on the natural bank of a small river.
