We recreated our backhallway/ associate enrance for our roll out Art of Hosting Brilliantly. This is a panoramic photo of the whole transformation. We ignited the red, with a continual strip through out the hallway. To the left, is where our Thoughtful, Dynamic, Polished hang (see additional photo). You can see our brand new time clocks, rolled out 9/21. Hanging across from the time clocks is Bill Marriotts tale of opening Twin Bridges. You cant see from the photo very well but also hanging is BE BRILLIANT. We want everyone to remember to be BRILLIANT

Ratna is associated with pride and earth -- solidity, mountains, hills, pyramids, buildings. "I am completely secure. I am what I am." It is a very proud way of looking at oneself. This means that one is afraid to loosen up, is continually piling up defenses, building a fortress. Equally, ratna is the Wisdom of Equanimity, which is all-pervading. Whether you construct buildings out of earth or whether you simply leave the earth as it is, it is the same thing. The earth remains as it is. You do not feel defeated or threatened at all. If you are a proud person, you feel yourself constantly challenged by the possibility of failure and defeat. In the enlightened mind the anxiety of maintaining oneself is transmuted into equanimity. There is still awareness of the solidity and stability of earth but there is no fear of losing it. Everything is open, safe and dignified; there is nothing to fear.
Ratna is related to the South and autumn, fertility, richness in the sense of continual generosity. When fruit is ripe, it automatically falls to the ground, asking to be eaten up. Ratna has this kind of giving away quality. It is luscious and open with the quality of mid-morning. It is yellow, connected with the sun's rays. Where vajra is associated with crystal, ratna is gold, amber, saffron. It has a sense of depth, real earthiness rather than texture, whereas vajra is purely texture, a crispy quality rather than fundamental depth. Ratna is so ripe and earthy, it is like a gigantic tree which falls to the ground and begins to rot and grow mushrooms all over it and is enriched by the weeds growing around it. It is a log in which animals might nest. Its color begins to turn to yellow and its bark to peel off, revealing an interior which is very rich and very solid. If you were to attempt to remove this log in order to use it as a part of a garden arrangement, it would be impossible because it would crumble and fall apart. It would be too heavy to carry anyway.

UNC associate professor Johanna Rosman performs research in Albemarle Sound on September 11, 2020, at Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head, North Carolina. Rosman and other researchers, who are based out of the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City, were deploying various types of scientific instruments above and below the waterline to study how waves are impacting living shorelines.

Anne Vardo-Zalik, associate professor of biology, and Greg Lutz, a Penn State York biology major, conducted research over the summer thanks to an Erickson Undergraduate Research Grant Lutz received. Lutz’s proposal is entitled “Exploring the Physiological Causation of Parasitic Host Manipulation.” The $3,500 grant allowed the duo to research the findings that parasites have been shown to manipulate the behavior of their hosts, which may increase their transmission to their next host. Although this behavioral modification has been documented for multiple parasite-host species, the mechanism by which the parasite achieves this feat is poorly understood. The experiments were performed using the rat tapeworm (Hymenolepis diminuta) and its beetle intermediate hosts (Tribolium confusum and T. castaneum) to determine if the parasite is affecting the beetle’s dopamine signaling. By giving beetles dopamine-related drugs the researchers hope to identify whether or not this pathway is targeted by the tapeworm to alter behavior in the beetle.

The Gaybe Lab, under the instruction of professor Gabe Moore, is focused on understanding the biological and sociological factors that relate to healthcare-associated infections.
"In our wet lab, we are cataloguing and characterizing microbes found on the Oberlin College campus, including the student health center," explains Moore. "Microbes were grown on a variety of different mediums and frozen for long term storage. From the microbe specimens we collected, we are able to isolate their genomic information in order to determine the species identity via sequencing. We then determine the pathogenicity, or the ability to cause disease, of these microbes by surveying case reports to see if these bacterial species are present in human infections. We hope to identify novel mechanisms of infection in microbes that infrequently cause disease before they become a problem in clinical settings."
