Ask restaurant was formerly a bank and the curved wall of the building is adorned with some of the 32 caryatids, or armless ladies, which continue along the adjoining terrace of shops. They date from about 1840 and are loosely based on similar columns at the Acropolis in Athens. We are so used to them but they are really quite a sight to behold and something that shouldn’t be missed if visiting Cheltenham.

Jökulsárgljúfur National Park is a former national park situated in the north of Iceland around the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. It lies to the north of the Dettifoss waterfall. On 7 June 2008, it became a part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park
The area is of interest because of its chaotic canyon and volcanic mountains. Eight thousand years ago, volcanic fissures of the Askja volcanic system erupted directly underneath the river and glacial ice. This caused explosions and chaotic flooding.
The center of the park was Vesturdalur with Hljóðaklettar (rock of echoes). Rauðhólar (red mountain) is of interest because of its special colouring due to iron oxidations. Another sight is the canyon of Ásbyrgi to the north of the park which is formed like a horseshoe.
It is a cold one out there...maybe not everywhere but it is here! Right now where I am it is -17C, feeling like -25C with the wind chill. I took a walk this morning and it wasn't too bad at the time. I cut it short though for the sake of my dog - I didn't want her to get too cold.
I got asked if I could come into work for the afternoon and I agreed to help out and started to head into town but turned around shortly after because I couldn't see due to the whiteouts that had started back up (it had started getting bad last night driving home from work). Everyone was driving slow on the highway and with their hazzard lights flashing, it was getting worse the further I drove and eventually I gave up and called my manager and turned around. :( Winter is beautiful but it can be dangerous at times too.

Don't ask me how they do it. It is not rare to see birds on these prickly perches. But Arizona has some very ferocious cactus... don't laugh... some of them seem to have an electric charge. You barely brush against them and they jump all over you.... they even stick to the vibram's sole of your hiking boots ... and ouch! is it ever hard to get rid of them... Beware, do not get close to them... I think the cholla is the most brutal of all cactus but in all fairness, not all cactus will aggressively "attack you"... I visited some gardens that have an incredibly beautiful variety of cactus. They come in all kinds of size, shape, colours and level of prickliness.

Last January 2022 I asked for help and a Flickr support hero removed both of my accounts from the Explore algorithm. I feel more relaxed and in the moment.
On the centuries-old Soelen estate lies Soelen Castle. The castle is surrounded by a moat and all around is an extensive (linear) landscape of forest and meadows crisscrossed with hiking trails. Since the early 1990s, Soelen Castle and the surrounding 157-hectare estate have been owned by Staatsbosbeheer. It was recently decided to sell the apartments in the castle, the coach house, the apartment in the gatehouse and the garages owned by Staatsbosbeheer.

taken just after the postman arrived and Simba did his usual psychotic "he's the end of the world" act to get the attention of everyone in the nearby town.
I saw this property about 1/2 mile off the road. I pulled into an empty parking lot of a deserted meat processing business two stone roads away. It was a neat old building so I started taking photos of it. Of course, a truck pulls into the lot. Now remember, I am in the country on a two lane road with nobody around. Good Grief.
So I started to back the car out and this man comes over to the car, “Hey, Hey, stop! May I help you with something?” he said. I explained how I liked to take pictures of old barns and buildings.
Instead of telling me to get lost, he asked me if I would like to photograph that old house way back off that dirt road. He pointed to the house I had been eyeing. I said, “I sure would!” So I drove down a muddy road with bricks sticking up and fields on both sides and took some shots of this beauty. It is for sale, by the way.
Now that was the nicest owner I’ve met yet. At least, I hope he was the owner :-)
At 815pm, the engineer on Santa Fe train #189 knows he has something special, as he is about to throw a fusee to us with a business card attached. On the back of the card he is asking for prints of the train he is running, as his power is 3 brand new ATSF SD75m's (238-236-230) on supposedly their first trip to the west coast. That was a fitting end to a good day of railfanning at Matfield Green.
