Michèle stands in a doorway in the Adobe Wall that is the only remaining part of the 1828 Mission Santa Clara de Asis.
Strongly backit, I exposed the image +2EV in camera and pushed the exposure by 1 more stop in Lightroom. Then I took the image into Photoshop and finished it like any regular portrait. Once I was satisfied with the portrait retouch, I added two duplicate layers and applied a 50 pixel gaussian blur to both. The lower one I put into multiply blend mode, which darkened the image considerably. I added a mask and painted over the model's face, brightening it again. I put the top layer into screen blend mode, brightening the image again, and reduced the opacity to 50%. This combination of blurred layers gives the gauzy, dreamy effect.
