Houses lining the smaller of the two, adjacent, town squares in Arras, called La Place des Héros (or La Petite Place). The houses in Flemish-Baroque-style were originally built in the 17th and 18th centuries, but like most of the town were severely damaged in the First World War and had to be restored to their original appearances.

Joyeux Noël à tous mes amis Flickr.

I wish all my Flickr friends a Merry Christmas;

Au bout il y a la lumière..

La citadelle d'Arras est construite par Vauban de 1668 à 1672, pour défendre la place d'Arras. Elle est inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco.

* The first shot is not from Alsace but was taken in the northern French city of Arras, where we spent a night. This shows a section of the vast square in the centre of town called La Grand' Place. The square is surrounded by a unique architectural ensemble of 155 Flemish-Baroque-style townhouses. These were built in the 17th and 18th centuries and were initially made of wood. In 1918, after the end of World War I, most of the townhouses were so severely damaged that they had to be restored to their pre-war conditions. They are now made of bricks.
