These are the top 500 feet (152 m) of Sedona, Arizona's Pointed Dome, elevation 5499 ft (1676 m), and its companion spire Queen Victoria, elev. 5402 ft (1647 m)—features near the bottom of a descending ridge that separates Bear Wallow Canyon (and Schnebly Hill Road) on its south from Casner Canyon on its north. The helicopter from which I took this photo at 3:36 PM on January 24, 2023 was above Bear Wallow Canyon, north of Schnebly Hill Road—0.43 mi (0.69 km) south of Pointed Dome.

Lower Antelope Canyon also known as slot canyons, is located just east of Page Arizona, and is a must visit for anyone serious about fascinating color and shape in nature. Photographers flock there every day to pay the fee and get the guided tour. Yes there is a cost involved to go into both upper and lower canyons. The Navajo tribe owns the rights to the area and monitor it closely to both preserve this natural treasure and to provide employment for tribe. My Images are all from the 'lower canyon'

Mallard at the main pond of Gilbert, Arizona's Riparian Preserve. A wonderful place to walk a mile or two. The blue sky reflected off the smooth surface of the water gave us this awesome blue.

A gorgeous two, late afternoon cool off and watch the inflatables float by. Part of Arizona's lovely wildlife.

Curving through Arizona’s rugged Crozier Canyon is an eastbound freight led by three Santa Fe EMDs on March 6, 1996. Two SD40-2s lead a former Amtrak SDP40F “cowl”, rebuilt by Santa Fe at San Bernardino and labeled a SDF40-2.

A quartet of GE Super Fleet locomotives pull an intermodal train through Arizona's Crozier Canyon the afternoon of Oct. 7, 1995.

Five of Freeport McMoran's GP38s combine for forty notches as they battle Arizona's steepest railroad grade at roughly 5% with a variety of traffic fresh from the Arizona & Eastern for delivery and spotting at the Copper & Gold Mine at the top of the hill in Morenci, Arizona.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.

Vast, magnificent and inarguably beautiful, the Grand Canyon is easily Arizona’s most distinguishable landmark – and a natural wonder that you simply have to see to believe. Stretching 277 miles from end to end, steep, rocky walls descend more than a mile to the canyon’s floor, where the wild Colorado River traces a swift course southwest. Rock that dates back 1.8 billion years lies at the bottom. Exactly how the river formed the canyon is still unclear, but geologists generally agree that most of the cutting occurred within the last five million years.

A shot of Arizona's tallest mountain, Humphreys Peak, as seen from the courtyard at Meteor Crater.

Not my "usual" kind of photo, but I like it because it's surreal and feels like a Pink Floyd album cover to me.

Passing through Arizona's Lower Antelope Canyon is like traveling back in time when these magnificent canyons were carved out.

Capture Arizona’s iconic images in infrared with Kerrick James. With stops in Sedona, Flagstaff, Monument...

A capture from Sedona during my hike. The valley was just endless and the vegetation fascinating for such a dry desert environment. Winding hiking Paths crisscrossed the valley and the red dirt. The temperature was sweltering even thought it was early in the morning

The Verde Valley (Yavapai: Matkʼamvaha) is a valley in central Arizona in the United States. The Verde River runs through it. The Verde River is one of Arizona's last free-flowing river systems. It provides crucial habitat for fish and wildlife, fresh water for local agricultural production, recreational opportunities for locals and tourists alike, and brings clean drinking water to over 2 million people in the greater Phoenix area. The valley is overlooked by Mingus Mountain and the Mogollon Rim.

Two unique Saguaro cacti that have seemingly merged arms. The left one was decapitated long ago and has grown new arms around the stump; the right one has long, drooping, damaged arms. I always get the (anthropomorphized) impression they’re supporting one another. Taken January, 2017 in Arizona's Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

The Olive Warbler is one of the characteristic birds of Arizona's sky islands. Interestingly, it isn't actually a warbler, being the sole member of the family Peucedramidae.

Rolling through Arizona's Coconino National Forest, a Santa Fe Railway train from Phoenix greets the morning sunshine at Darling, Arizona on Sept. 30, 1994. A second train can be seen pulling into Cosnino, and headed west toward Flagstaff and beyond. Winona bridge (old US 66) has always been one of my favorite spots to watch trains on the mighty Santa Fe.

A blossoming, leafless Ocotillo in Arizona's Ironwood Forest National Monument. Ocotillos drop their leaves in dry conditions but still manage impressive floral displays that resemble blossoming barbed wire. (April 2023)

I recently posted a full-length photo of this Singleleaf Pinyon tree (Pinus monophylla subsp. fallax), which appeared in Flickr's "in explore." The tree sits atop a knob on the NNE side of Coconino County, Arizona's Bell Rock, on the ridge that is climbed by the Upper Bell Rock Trail. The peak behind and to the left of Courthouse Butte is part of the escarpment of Munds Mountain Wilderness. I took this photograph on January 29, 2023.

Canyon de Chelly pictograph of the Spanish Conquistadors

An excerpt from The Place Where Two Fell Off

Chasing tall legends for his new book, Blood and Thunder, Hampton Sides takes a wild ride deep into one of the most sacred spots on earth—Arizona's Canyon de Chelly:

'At a place called Standing Cow Ruin, Ben points out a remarkable pictograph stained on the wall. It's a realistic rendering of a long train of cavalrymen, wearing flat-brimmed hats, carrying lances and muskets, and riding pinto horses into battle. The ominous figures look like horsemen of the apocalypse, their capes clearly emblazoned with crosses...."Those are Spaniards," Ben says. "From your town. Santa Fe."'

Mooney Falls is about a mile downstream from Havasu Falls in Arizona's Grand Canyon. Getting there is a unforgettable adventure.

Recommend viewing large to take in all the rocks, small rocks in the foreground and the stars. The full size JPEG out of Lightroom is nearly 59MB.
