Fíflar

Í öðrum heimi...

á Thorvaldsen bar, Austurstræti 8 – 10,

101 Reykjavík

1 . – 31. desember 2007,

Dandelions

In another world…

In early June this summer, I was in the garden pulling weeds and digging up dandelions. The garden was like a battlefield, with dandelion corpses strewn all over it. Having spotted a robust tuft of the flower at the flagpole, I was about to launch an attack on it when something held me back. I gazed at my target, ran inside to fetch my camera and started shooting pictures of the intruder. I was immensely surprised to see how well my model photographed and by its incredible beauty. Afterwards I stood in tears watching all the fallen dandelions lying scattered over the garden, which could have become works of art.

This set me thinking about these harbingers of spring, which cheer us up in hopes that winter is finally retreating. They are also the first wild flower that most Icelandic children, whether town- or country-dwelling, learn to recognise. Many a dandelion bouquet has been given to mothers and grandmothers, then put in a small vase or jam jar and fondly placed on the kitchen window sill. I decided to photograph dandelions for the rest of that summer – and allow the garden to flaunt its wildest plant and floral displays.

Regards

Minutes later the sky opened and torrential rain followed , with myself and Arfa Dint wondering if it was ever going to pass.

A mini series today :) we went out with Flickr friend Gavin aka Arfa Dint..we had a great day,it's been two years since we last met Gavin at Weymouth station..It was good to catch up :)

The Villa Firuze, built in 1892 in one of the most famous resorts of Georgia, Borjomi, was constructed for the Consul of Persia, Mirza Reza Khan (1854-1938), and was his resort residence. When he left Georgia, the building functioned as hotel, and during the Soviet period it became a building within the sanatorium Firuze. Today it is privately owned and is not occupied. Our research briefly describes the history of the Borjomi resort, a brief biography of Mirza Reza Khan, and the architectural pecu-liarities of the building within the contexts of the function of the building, local circum-stances and the owner’s cultural. A compara-tive analysis of the architectural structure of Iranian residences of the 19th century and local Georgian residences, namely the “Tbilisian house”, of the same period reveals the peculiarities of this structure. For both types of residential houses, courtyards were very important, however their cultural uses were quite different. They had different structures and socio-cultural purposes, for example the basis of planning an Iranian residential house was a division into zones (e.g. winter and summer zones). This was influenced both by climate and by a clear delimitation of the social roles of women and men, which dictated personal and semi-personal space, or andaruni and biruni (andarūnī , bīrūnī ). For an Iranian house, the existence of both personal and semi-personal spaces is char-acteristic. The Iranian courtyard is com-pletely closed to the outer world and does not open outwards; nor does it offer access on any side. This is a main difference from Tbilisian courtyards that are semi-open and connect directly to the street, i.e. the outer world. There is no clear limit between per-sonal and public spaces. To the contrary, the yard--as well as the balcony--is a kind of intermediary link, a semi-open, transitional space, where personal activity is directed to-wards the social and doesn’t turn its back on public space. Such considerations show how architecture accommodates the content, ex-pressing cultural identity. In the case of Firuze, however, the concept of yards is different from Iranian residences of the 19th c. Indeed it resembles the yards of a Tbilisian house as it directly adjoins the street and the space is not completely isolat-ed from public space. The Villa Firuze court-yard, also like a Tbilsian house, is character-ized by uninterrupted balconies along each floor. It resembles a Tbilisian house not only in appearance and style but the function was also similar. The balcony connects dif-ferent parts of the building– rooms, dining hall, kitchen, spa, etc. Yet the building has an oriental appearance and is characterized by its décor. The profile of the upper part of the wooden balcony on the main façade was likely inspired by the peshtak-balcony with pointed arch, characteristic of Iranian archi-tecture. Mosaics with mirrors were also char-acteristic of Iranian architecture. Here these were created by the master, Mirza Muham-mad Naqash Qazvin, invited from Qazvin. His name is written on a board in the center of the balcony. Oriental mukarnas motifs, Iranian paintings with flowers and birds, etc. are also used in the décor. Thus, the desire of the owner, Mirza Deza Khan, to make his Borjomi residence resemble his native Iran and express his identity was realized. Photos of portraits of the Iranian Shah of the epoch and other nobles were included in the décor of the balcony, giving the building its unique appearance. Thus, Villa Firuze embodies ele-ments both of Iranian art and the architec-tural concepts of a Tbilisian house, including its European embossed décor with cupids and embellishments. Overall, the Firuze is a building with diverse and interesting visual aspects with its roofs of different shapes, while the dynamically ar-ranged architectural structures fit the envi-ronment – the Caucasus Mountains reaching to the sky, the tall spruce and other trees, all perfectly fitting the environment and creat-ing an organic unity with nature. Villa Firuze is unique for its artistic-architectural charac-teristics—the organic unification of different artistic traditions and a harmonious amalga-mation with nature and environment--that creates its artistic value. Besides this, its his-torical value is also clear proof of the peace-ful co-habitation, openness and cultural dia-logue between people of different identities and cultures of that period.

A reason for going out today was a working on RTT from York Parcels Sidings to Gascoigne Wood Down Loop. It was a DRS Class 66 - 66426 which made a number of runs through Selby onto Howden then back through Selby onto Peckfield Crossover then back to Howden. 66426 which has Fugro RILA Measurement System equipment on the front heads over Sandhill Lane Level Crossing on its way to back to York with the final trip of the day! Thank you to Gavin (Arfa Dint) for info on the Fugro RILA Measurement System.

Arfa Abdul Karim Randhawa, February 1995 – 14 January 2012, was a Pakistani student and computer prodigy, who in 2004 at the age of nine years became Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP),the youngest in the world until 2008. She was invited by Bill Gates to visit the Microsoft Headquarters in the USA. A science park in Lahore was named after her, the Arfa Software Technology Park.

Arfa was born to a family from the village of Chak No. 4JB Ram Dewali in Faisalabad, Punjab. After returning to Pakistan from a visit to Microsoft headquarters, Arfa gave numerous television and newspaper interviews.

In 2011, at the age of 16, Arfa Abdul Karim was studying at the Lahore Grammar School Paragon Campus in her second year of A-levels. On 22 December 2011 she suffered a cardiac arrest after an epileptic seizure that damaged her brain, and was admitted to Lahore's Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in critical condition.

On 9 January 2012, Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, contacted Arfa's parents and directed his doctors to adopt "every kind of measure" for her treatment. Gates set up a special panel of international doctors who remained in contact with her local doctors through teleconference. The panel received details about her illness and provided assistance in diagnosis and treatment. Local doctors dismissed the option of moving Arfa to another hospital owing to her being on a ventilator and in critical condition. Members of Arfa's family have lauded Bill Gates for offering to bear her treatment expenses. On 13 January 2012, Arfa Abdul Karim started to improve and some parts of her brain showed signs of improvement. Her father, Amjad Abdul Karim Randhawa, said Microsoft had raised the possibility of flying Arfa to the US for care.

On 14 January 2012, 16-year-old Arfa Abdul Karim died at 9:50 PM (Pakistan Standard Time) at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Lahore.

On 15 January 2012, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced that the name of Lahore Technology Park would be changed to Arfa Software Technology Park.

Sunday night at Barnsley and the rattle of 142 and 156 DMU's is broken by a real novelty , the appearance of 2 Class 73's.

As Arfa Dint mentions in his txt on capturing the two at Meadowhall there expected appearance in this part of the woods has been a stop start affair.

The working is the 3Q93 1518 Derby RTC - Derby RTC covered by GB Railfreight 73962 and 963 with 963 leading here , during the course of the diagram the ED's will pass through Barnsley 3 times this being the first.

I've re-dated this one as I came across arfa dint's picture of the depot being demolished.

Occasionally I passed the depot on the M1 from time to time, and can remember the shock I felt when the depot wasn't there. Soon after I drove around the whole area and was deeply saddened by what I saw - must have been around 2000.

Back to 1982. Seconds after I took the picture, the British Transport Police arrived, and a coach load of trainspotters quickly scarpered!

A re-scan revealed several numbers, along with a most useful list from Brian Daniels who was also there that day - 08507 on the left, and 47278 behind 20182. I took a picture near to the depot of 45132 and 08880 on the fueller. Happy days!

A mini series today :) we went out with Flickr friend Gavin aka Arfa Dint..we had a great day,it's been two years since we last met Gavin at Weymouth station..It was good to catch up :)

The terminators finished production.

After running round at Brightside the 0755 6A01 Thurnscoe (set off from Moorthorpe) - Belmont Down Yard Sunday engineers train heads back the way it came seen approaching Meadowhall , it will turn right after Swinton to get to its destination.

A different view was captured by Arfa Dint who was two bridges down in the distance.

One of the raw pictures made for [ Poupluche ] advertising campaign

Many years ago, about eight if I had to guess, I collected this little Ford from it's former home in Cambridgshire, a journey which wasn't without incident. The previous keeper had given us an assurance it was ready to just drive away but on collection it was blocked in and with at least one flat tyre. When finally extracted and underway, the brakes were sticking on, the steering didn't want to go around one corner or another and shortly afterwards the clutch fluid drained away. The return journey up the A14 and M6 was an interesting one to say the least as it included the afternoon rush hour. When back at RBW and on the pit. we discovered the nut which secures the steering box drop arm to the power steering ram to be finger tight and backed off. The moral of the story is never to take someone elses word that a vehicle is ready to move!

Anyway, the little Supreme IV bodied Ford sat around for year after year awaiting a customer until very recently salvation came from the preservation movement. Following a good deal of resurrection work, the now rare 35 seater coach passed it's Class 5 MoT successfully last Friday ... and today the hand brake cable broke! When you've found where the gears are, and they're not always in the same place, It's great fun to drive and goes like stink!
