Harbour and city skyline view captured fron the North Shore of Vancouver

The circus is a group of three sets of Georgian mansions in Bath, Somerset. Many famous people have lived there over the years and if you would like to join the ranks of the Bath elite one of these beautiful mansions is currently for sale for a cool ยฃ5,000,000, quite a lot of money and certainly beyond my reach unless I get lucky in this weekends lottery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Circus,_Bath

An unusual view of the Lloydโ€™s Bank Building on Harbour Side, Bristol. Itโ€™s quite an impressive building from ground level (and from above!). I imagine itโ€™s pretty much deserted now though with one super computer doing the work of hundreds of people. I stand by to be corrected!

Golden Temple, Bandarbans, Bangladesh.

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco's bustling financial district, the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero stands as a testament to architectural brilliance and historical significance. Designed by the renowned architect John Calvin Portman, this iconic hotel opened its doors in 1973 as part of the Embarcadero Center development. The atrium, a defining feature of the hotel, is a stunning example of Modernist architecture with Brutalist influences.

The atrium's triangular shape and 300-foot height create a sense of grandeur and openness, making it one of the most photographed hotel spaces of the 1970s. The use of monumental atrium spaces in urban hotels was a trendsetter, and Portman's design for the Hyatt Regency San Francisco set a new standard. The atrium provides a dramatic and inviting space for guests and visitors to gather, offering breathtaking views of the city and the bay.

The hotel's 17 stories rise above the Embarcadero Center, with the atrium acting as a central hub that connects various parts of the building. The design incorporates sleek, modern lines and an abundance of natural light, creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests. The interior spaces are adorned with high-quality materials and finishes, reflecting the hotel's commitment to luxury and comfort.

The Hyatt Regency Embarcadero is not just a place to stay; it's a piece of San Francisco's architectural heritage. Its historical significance and innovative design continue to draw visitors and admirers from around the world. Nestled in the vibrant heart of Osaka, the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Building stands as a testament to the city's rich architectural heritage. This iconic structure, completed in 1933, is a stunning example of Art Deco design, characterized by its bold geometric patterns, lavish ornamentation, and a sense of modernity that was ahead of its time. As you approach the building, the first thing that catches your eye is the magnificent entrance. The facade is adorned with intricate stone carvings, including elegant motifs and geometric designs that reflect the meticulous craftsmanship of the era. The entrance itself is a masterpiece, featuring a series of stained glass panels in warm hues of yellow and orange, arranged in a repetitive star pattern. These panels not only add a touch of color but also create a welcoming glow that beckons visitors inside. The ornate metalwork on the doors and surrounding areas further enhances the building's grandeur, showcasing the attention to detail that went into its construction. Inside, the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Building continues to impress with its opulent interiors, including a grand lobby with a stunning mural depicting the history of transportation. This building is not just an architectural gem; it also holds historical significance as a cultural and social landmark in Osaka. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates beauty, the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Building is a must-visit landmark that embodies the spirit of Osaka's architectural innovation and cultural heritage.

Standing with poise on the storied stretch of Massachusetts Avenue known as Embassy Row, this grand Beaux-Arts mansion exemplifies the opulence of Washington, D.C.โ€™s Gilded Age. Its creamy stone faรงade is symmetrical and imposing, adorned with an ornate balustrade, arched windows, and wrought iron Juliet balconies that evoke a Parisian sensibility. A bold green entablature adds contrast and elegance, crowning the faรงade just below a dramatic red-tiled mansard roof.

The buildingโ€™s architectural details speak volumes: bracketed cornices, paired chimneys, and a rhythmic arrangement of windows emphasize balance and classical proportions. At the upper level, the arched dormers with keystones pierce the terracotta roofline, creating a distinctive silhouette. The mansionโ€™s roof terrace and sculptural details suggest a time when private residences were designed with the same grandeur as civic monuments.

Now likely serving a diplomatic or institutional purpose, the building reflects the layers of history found throughout Embassy Row. What was once a single-family residence for Washingtonโ€™s elite has likely been adapted for diplomatic use, a common trajectory for these stately mansions in the 20th century.

The photograph captures the building head-on, flattening its perspective to showcase the formal composition of its architectural language. Flanking trees, their bare branches reaching upward, mirror the vertical emphasis of the faรงade. The absence of leaves draws the eye to the buildingโ€™s stone craftsmanship and iron fencingโ€”elements often obscured in summer months.

Parked cars anchor the image in present day, providing scale and a subtle reminder that even the most illustrious addresses are still part of the living city. The subdued overcast lighting creates even exposure, allowing for the intricate moldings, window pediments, and friezes to be seen in high detail without the distraction of harsh shadows or glare.

This image is a testament to Washingtonโ€™s architectural diversity. While the city is best known for its neoclassical monuments and federal symmetry, it is also a place of grand residential styles that speak to the ambitions of its wealthiest residents from a century ago. Beaux-Arts, in particular, represents a blend of academic classicism and expressive ornamentation, imported from France and adapted with American scale and drama.

Whether viewed as an icon of aesthetic grandeur, a diplomatic outpost, or a preservationistโ€™s delight, the building radiates timeless dignity. It anchors its corner of the city with confidenceโ€”another page in the storybook of Washingtonโ€™s architectural legacy.

Nestled at the gateway of the Presidio National Park, the โ€œPalm Tree Houseโ€ stands as a timeless masterpiece. Constructed in 1924, this four-bedroom residence boasts intricate craftsmanship and abundant natural light. Willis Polk, a luminary in San Franciscoโ€™s architectural history, is believed to be the genius behind its design.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Harvard Square at 1304 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts, lies a stunning example of Art Nouveau architecture that once housed Gnomon Copy. This storefront is a true gem, showcasing the intricate and organic designs characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement, which flourished from the late 19th to early 20th centuries.

As you approach this historic site, your eyes are immediately drawn to the grand wooden arch that frames the entrance. This arch, with its elegant curves and natural motifs, epitomizes the Art Nouveau styleโ€™s emphasis on flowing, organic lines inspired by nature. The number โ€œ1304โ€ is prominently displayed at the peak of the arch, marking this location as a significant piece of Cambridgeโ€™s architectural heritage.

The large glass windows flanking the entrance once provided a glimpse into the bustling activities of Gnomon Copy, a popular local business offering services like faxing, copying, typesetting, and printing. The purple signage, though now a memory, added a vibrant touch to the storefront, inviting students, academics, and locals to step inside.

Designed by the Boston Brahmin architectural firm of Coolidge & Carlson for Coes & Young, a Boston shoe store firm, this exceptional shopfront was completed in 191312. The buildingโ€™s design reflects the Art Nouveau movementโ€™s reaction against the industrial revolutionโ€™s excesses, aiming to create beauty and harmony through craftsmanship and artistic expression.

Today, while Gnomon Copy no longer occupies this space, the preserved architectural details continue to enchant passersby. This storefront stands as a testament to Harvard Squareโ€™s eclectic past, where commercial activity and artistic expression coexisted harmoniously. For those who appreciate historical architecture and the beauty of Art Nouveau design, 1304 Massachusetts Avenue offers a captivating glimpse into a bygone era.

I started a IL Historic Places group over the weekend and this house is on the list. I really don't know why this is considered a historically significant building, but it is for sale, so maybe the previous owners tried to protect the structure from development, as Elmhurst has many new McMansions. This house is called Robinwood. It also known as the George H. Miller House. Designed in 1908 by Joy Wheeler Dow, the exterior is made of limestone and brick with a huge roof and dormer windows. It is located at 208 S. Arlington, down the block from the two Walter Burley Griffin designs.
