Many apps have come and gone, but here is the current state of the apps on my iPhone 3G. I showed you mine... now show me yours! :)

Note to all: Click the "ALL SIZES" button above the image to zoom in.

Note to Apple: Please make an iTunes feature to organize my apps. If I have an icon/app on "screen 9" that I want to move to "screen 1," I don't want to have to drag it through eight pages (with my finger on the phone) to get it there. I just want to click and drag it on the computer. Please allow multiple selections. - kaithxbai

This is a bit complicated for me I have to say guys...well some of you have

seen my mobile telephone which is now eleven years old. It does text and

telephone calls only. No pictures (sorry if you've sent me one I won't see

it) and no access to e-mail or the internet (but it's got rubber buttons and

I can type 60 words to the minute woo hoo!) . It's nice being a little retro

and I'm not bothered about all the latest fancy gadgets. I was recently

texting in a cafe and someone came up to me and asked if they could take a

photograph of my 'phone. Now that really made me smile!

Anyway without trying to advertise myself as a middle-aged dinosaur let's

have a go at trying to explain this new APP thingy that Lothian's just

introduced.

So, what does APP mean? I have just discovered I'm not the only one who

hasn't a Scooby!

"Application software, also known as an application or an "app", is computer

software designed to help the user to perform specific tasks on modern

telephone gadgets like iphones and smartphones".

I'm still none the wiser!

As I understand, the Lothian Buses APP means there's no need to have the

exact amount of money anymore in my glove for the bus journey I'm about

to make. Instead, I can buy and load my mobile telephone (er well I don't

think it will work on mine!) with Lothian

Buses M-tickets. These can then be used at any time. The APP also uses

real-time information and can send notifications so we will always know when

our bus is due - but hang-on, I bet it doesn't tell me what fleet number it

will be boo hoo!

Ian Craig, Chief Executive, says

"This is another step forward for us and our passengers as we drive further

innovation in the service we provide. The ability to travel conveniently

without change or a season ticket is very important of course, but the app

offers so much more. Whether it's an alert about your next three departures

or push notifications for news about your usual service, this app will be a

valuable practical tool for all of our customers.

Yes Ian but why can't we have the fleet number shown? Do that and I'll get

myself straight along to the shop today!

The new version of the iPhone firmware (build # 5A347) thanks to AppleInsider!

New calc, new Mail (to delete quickly bunch of emails), and some new apps already installed like AIM, Remote...

Remote is quite nice !! And AIM, well I've already found a bug in the identification form ... let's say "youth" bug.

I didn't succeed in installing app from iTunes, I had to do it directly from the iPhone AppStore --> I guess it is due to the fact I've installed earlier than scheduled by Apple.

So far so good.

I couldn't add this photo before because the news only broke on Wednesday, but this is a sneaky photo of the future games' characters that are being limited to 250 of each and being sold exclusively in Selfridges, London.

Nice piccies here : www.flickr.com/photos/makielab/9369633851/in/set-72157634...

What I used:

1) GeekTool (Available for free on the Mac AppStore)

2) Photoshop (Pixelmator or any other image editing software is fine)

3) Nocturne (Free software by BlackTree code.google.com/p/blacktree-nocturne/)

4) Wallpaper (Sunset at Sea from wallpapers-place.com/nature/sunset-at-sea-hd-wallpaper/)

5) Terminal, just to make the Dock 2D instead of the regular glass dock

6) Font: Helvetica Neue - Ultra Light (comes with every Mac)

What I did:

1) GeekTool: Displays the time and date. Time in words is a Geeklet called Fuzzy Time which can be found here www.macosxtips.co.uk/geeklets/system/display-time-in-word...

2) Photoshop: Erase of the image except for the clouds and the glow of the sun. Set the original image as the wallpaper and overlay this on top using GeekTool

3) Nocturne: Great app that turns your Menu bar black, works best when translucent menu bar is set to 'off' in System Preferences

4) Terminal: Only if you want the flat 2D dock instead of the usual glass tray. Paste the following in Terminal and hit Return

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean yes; killall Dock

When you want the glass dock, just replace 'yes' with 'no' and run it again

Sent from Comic Touch on my iPhone while riding the bus. Get this: I purchased Comic Touch from Apple's App Store (the day it was released) while connected to WiFi on the bus, snapped the picture on my iPhone, annotated it, and uploaded it to Flickr -- all while rolling somewhere in Union City. The point? Who knows? Ask Dick Tracy.

So, I watched the Keynote last night, got a good night's sleep and woke up to more geek outrage on the internet. Part of the bigger problem with geeks is that much of the technology on the iPad was released with the iPhone back in 2007. If it had been released then, it would have been as popular as the iPhone. (In fact, it probably would have been MORE popular, considering that it comes ready made with an SDK and 140,000 apps). Also, geeks tend to want impossible technology, that is, technology from the future, but at rock-bottom-Apple-please-kill-yourself prices, but this is not a console. This isn't a PS3. This isn't a device that you sell far below manufacturing costs to recoup the losses in game sales.

This device is simple. It's a device you can use to surf the web while sitting at the couch watching television, which is an odd image I know, but it's exactly what I do with my iPod Touch right now. Of course, I like this better than my iPod Touch because I don't have to strain my eyes while looking at the internet.

And what's more, surfing the internet on a 3 inch screen is a chore. I appreciate that Apple led us out of the wilderness that is WAP browsers, but a little screen is a little screen. The iPhone/iPod Touch are great for games and talking and making notes and a bunch of other things, but for me, the browsing experience on the iPad is going to be so much better than an iPod touch or iPhone. The iPad is what ChromeOS and the JooJoo promises to be, but better. It's also going to be out in the not so distant future.

I also like the iPad over my iPod Touch because it COMES WITH FREAKING 3G. Not so long ago, I advocated the idea that the iPod Touch could come with a 3G data plan, thereby erasing the need for anyone to have an iPhone and be tethered to an expensive cell phone plan. I mean, this is where the future is headed. If you have Skype over 3G, you will no longer need a cell phone. Well, folks, in case you weren't listening, this is revolutionary! This is what keeps cell phone providers up at night! Geeks aren't listening because they're still searching the iPad for their stupid HDMI slot. Engadget did a story about the iPad SDK and it seems that Apple just removed the restrictions on VoIP over 3G.

Did you hear that? Apple just removed the restriction on VoIP over 3G! Apple should have put this at the forefront of their Keynote or at least added it for emphasis as a "one more thing," because this is the future delivered today.

Can other phones do this? Sure. Droid probably does, but the iPad has the distinction of providing 3G data WITHOUT A CONTRACT. I learned in film school that if you want the audience to remember a detail, then you should present it in three different ways. Well, here it is again, my friends, in case you didn't hear the first two times. Apple just removed the restriction on VoIP over 3G and just offered you 3G data without a contract! Put Skype on this bad boy and you can wave your cell phone good bye.

This is why Apple didn't add a phone app to the iPad. In fact, now that I think about it, maybe they didn't emphasize the 3G aspect because it would have scared the snot out of cell phone industry, which they still have to do business with.

Now, does this mean that I like everything about the iPad? Absolutely not. For one thing, I don't really understand why this thing has to be tethered to iTunes on a desktop computer. A device this size should be able to use a desktop version of iTunes. I was puzzled to see what looked like a fully fledged version of iTunes demonstrated on the iPad, only to be told later in the Keynote that it would sync up with iTunes. Hopefully we'll be given an option, but knowing Apple, I would say that this is an all-or-nothing proposition.

I also have expressed my outrage that Apple freaking screwed Delicious Library! iBooks is an obvious rip-off of Delicious Library. There's no way around it. Of course, Wil Shipley has been rather flippant about this and has even pointed out that he has no look-and-feel design patent for ebooks on a wooden shelf, so maybe I should calm down about it. Still, Apple should cut Wil a check. It's only fair.

I also feel that the lack of a camera is a definite oversight, but not because I want one per se, but because the tweens just love cameras. I have a 11 year old niece, so I can eagerly attest to this. They love taking pictures of themselves.

My criticisms aside, the iPad is a revolutionary product. The geeks won't like it, but of course, the geeks don't like anything that isn't revolutionary and under 2 dollars. One of the things that surprised me today and last night are geeks that are freaking COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PRICE. This after people regularly mocked the yet to be released Tablet for costing $1000. The same people who said they wouldn't buy the Tablet unless it was $499 are now saying they won't buy it unless it is $200. There is a growing part of me that is in a lot of ways glad that Steve Jobs regularly thumbs his nose at geeks. They can really be idiots.

The iPad solves 90 percent of the problems for regular people. It's the portable internet. It's bigger than any dedicated gaming portable on the market. It has music and video. Movies can be watched at almost the same resolution as desktops, but while sitting in your lap. The iPad can be used as an e-book reader and has access to all 140,000 of apps available on iTunes.

The iPad also builds on the most popular mobile OS on the market today and that's the iPhone OS. The great benefit of the iPhone OS is that it appeals to people who are scared to death of computers. John Gruber mentioned something about this a while back. If you know anyone who keeps all their files on their desktop, that person is likely terrified of using their computer. To someone who is scared of their computer, file systems like the Finder or Windows Explorer are just elaborate ways to lose their stuff, which is why they keep everything on their desktop where they can see it.

Well, it is noteworthy that the iPhone OS doesn't even have a user level file system and that was on purpose. Documents, like those sure to be created in iWork, will be stored in the apps themselves. So, again, it was natural for Apple to use the iPhone OS for no other reason that it makes computers easier to use for regular people. There will be no more explaining to grandma how to click the mouse to open things like folders. Her fingers will do the walking.

To 99 percent of the people out there, that is revolutionary too.

Note: It has occurred to me that the geek definition of "revolutionary" on the internet is fairly distorted when it comes to Apple. Revolution does not imply "newness." Revolution implies change. There may very well be devices that have implemented many of the features that Apple has in the iPad, that does not mean that those devices were delivered with a UI as simple to use as the iPhone OS or through an ecosystem as robust as iTunes or in a package as desirable as the iPad. Those other devices also likely could not induce change because they simply were not from Apple.

This distortion of what constitutes "revolution" is the same distortion I see when people talk about monopolies or innovation. Innovation, for all intents and purposes, is not the same as invention. While Steve Jobs often talks about innovation, geeks regularly accuse him of saying he "invented" something. The two words have totally different meanings.
