Antares is a red supergiant star in the constellation Scorpius, the scorpion. Antares represents the heart of the animal, perhaps due in part to its color. Two open star clusters appear to be nearby--if Antares is the center of a clock, a large cluster is seen at 2:30 and a smaller, closer cluster at 1:00.

Antares is both bright and conspicuously red or red/orange, and nearby gaseous clouds take on that color.

The bright star twice the distance of the large star cluster at 2:00 is Alniyat, which illuminates both blue and red clouds. Directly above Antares in this photo is 5-Oph, and it is embedded in a cloud that glows blue, near dense, cold clouds that do not glow and block light from stars behind them.

Antares is much larger than our sun. If Antares was at the center of our solar system, its outer perimeter would be between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter--that is, instead of being 93 million miles from the sun, we would be inside of Antares.

This cluster of stars and clouds can be seen all summer, just to the right of the Milky Way above the southern horizon.

As Hibernia was getting off the ground last March, Alvaro posted their Baserunner, and I loved everything about it. I just had to build one, so I added a removable bed covering to the chassis that still allowed for some cargo to be stowed underneath.

This a reprocessed version of an image I took last year. I have made progress by using a dedicated astro-processing software now. This way I can stay closer to the actual colors that are found in space and overall produce a more pleasing image.

The pentacon of stars include the super giant star Antares in the constellation of Scorpio, the globular cluster Messier 4, the more distant globular cluster NGC6144, and the star Alniyat, also part of the Scorpio constellation. It is one of the most colorful regions of the night sky.

This is only 45 minutes of integration time, or 45 one minute exposures.

I can't wait for summer, when I can aim my camera at Scorpio again and take several hours worth of exposures.

Antares is a massive, red super-giant star, the brightest in the constellation of Scorpio and one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It's located approximately 550 light-years from Earth and is known for its reddish hue, which has earned it the nickname "the heart of the scorpion".

Visually close to it is a globular cluster by the name of Messier 4, it's true distance is estimated to be around 6000 light years. The second, smaller cluster visible through the dust in the 1 o'clock position from Antares is NGC 6144 and that one is about 33000 light years away. The entire region of the sky is rich in interstellar dust, some of which is illuminated by Antares.

I took 45 sixty second exposures along with the obligatory dark and flat frames, and processed everything in Starry Landscape Stacker, Photoshop and Lightroom.

More experiments with deep sky targets! This is a stack of 4 shots, each 12 minutes at f/4, ISO400. Sigma lens, Celestron CGEM2 mount with a ZWO guide camera for autoguiding. I tried at f/2.8 but I did notice just a little coma which seems gone at f/4. I don't know how long an exposure I can get without issues yet! This one was processed with a Photoshop star reduction technique, not something I normally like, but I l don't mind this!

The border of Ophiuchus and Scorpius presents some of the most dynamic colors and dust clouds in the night sky. This is a three panel mosaic taken with a Canon 6D and SharpStar 150mm f/2.8 Newtonian. Just over an hour exposure per frame (some variation due to clouds and blockages). Processing was a bit of a challenge. Fortunately PixInsight makes mosaic assembly easy: Images registered and integrated, then plate solved and geometrically corrected before merging a mosaic by coordinates.

I had scouted this location for over a year and this was my first opportunity to shoot a launch from here. I knew it would be crowded, so I arrived about five hours prior to launch and found about 20 people already here, and I was able to get a good spot. At launch I would estimate several hundred were here.
