This Mandarin Duck has been spotted on and off at Burnaby Lake Regional Park in the suburbs of Vancouver for about 3 years. Nobody really knows where it came from. One possibility is that it might have escaped or been released. The species is native to East Asia where it is typically migratory. There are some feral populations in the USA and Europe. This particular male hangs out with the Wood Ducks, a cousin species, at the park and is courting one of the females who bear similarities with female Mandarin ducks. I don't know if they can hybridize. This duck sure draws the photographers' attention particularly at this time of year with its dazzling breeding plumage.
Ce Canard Mandarin est fréquemment observé au Parc Régional du Lac Burnaby en banlieue de Vancouver depuis environ 3 ans. Personne ne sait vraiment d'où il vient. Une possibilité est qu'il ait été relâché ou se soit échappé. C'est une espèce typiquement migratoire qui est native de l'Asie de l'Est. Il y a des populations férales aux Etats-Unis et en Europe. Au Parc, ce mâle socialise avec les Canards Branchus, une espèce cousine, et courtise une des femelles Branchus qui sont semblables aux femelles Mandarins. J'ignore si l'hybridation est possible. Ce canard attire toujours l'attention des photographes surtout à ce temps-ci de l'année quand il a repris son plumage nuptial éblouissant.
🇫🇷 L’ ibis rouge est une espèce aux pieds légèrement palmés, un fin bec incurvé vers le bas et surtout un magnifique plumage presque entièrement rouge, sauf l’extrémité bleu-noir lustré des ailes. Cette couleur varie du rouge écarlate au rose-orangé selon la population, la saison, et surtout la nourriture. La coloration spectaculaire de l’ibis rouge est due à la présence de caroténoïde, pigment contenu dans les petits crustacés qu’il consomme.
. Les jeunes, naissent brun, avec un ventre blanc. Des taches rouges apparaissent ensuite, au fur et à mesure de leur croissance, et ils deviennent totalement rouges au bout de deux ans.

🇩🇪 lDer Rote Ibis hat leicht geschwungene Füße, einen dünnen, nach unten gebogenen Schnabel und vor allem ein wunderschönes, fast vollständig rotes Gefieder mit Ausnahme der blauschwarzen, glänzenden Flügelspitzen. Diese Farbe variiert von scharlachrot bis rosa-orange, je nach Population, Jahreszeit und vor allem Nahrung. Un lieu peu ordinaire, où le souvenir plane encore plus de 100 ans après. De 1914 à 1918 des soldats français et allemands se sont affrontés jour et nuit et aujourd'hui ces bois en sont encore le témoin.
An unusual place, where the memory is still hovering more than 100 years later. From 1914 to 1918 French and German soldiers fought each other days and nights and today these woods still bear witness to it.
Aujourd'hui, 22 septembre 2022, mon grand-père aurait eu 100 ans.

first try at a composite shot, combined an old landscape shot with a snowy owl shot that I cut out as best I could
taken a number of years ago, while approaching Mt Hood the high point in Oregon I saw this cloud formation, I'm not sure if it was a lenticular cloud starting to form ( that's what I thought it was ) but it looked pretty cool just the same.
this was taken before I had a DSLR I shot it with a Kodak V610 point and shoot so it is what it is.
on a sad note I came back 8 years later to climb Hood again and you could notice the glaciers shrinking : (

The last .9 miles to the summit of Mt. Whitney from Muir junction .
If you blow the shot up and look real close at the summit you can make out the small storm shelter up there. there were 5 of us all squeezed together sleeping in there that night.
