The leucrot is a spawn of the unholy unite of lion and hyena.

Artdoll was based on the prehistoric predator Andrewsarchus, and was made by Viktoria Nampisano.

Now a mammal, Andrewsarchus is meant to be one of the largest mammalian terrestrial carnivores of all time. The animal's skull was 83 cm long.

Ho-Sebeb is a really twisted hyena god-king, who made a child with a lioness. That's the leucrot, an unholy mix of lion and hyena.

Most of them are created by Satoshi Kamiya or Fumiaki Kawahata. I didn´t want to write all the paper types and sizes down, but each one of these models is folded from a single uncut square. I folded them in relative size to the real animals (0.5 cm accord one meter in real). If you move the cursor over the models, you can see the name and creator of every model.

:The scene:

 

You're now witnessing the scene from the late Eocene central Asia, where an adult specimen of the giant brontothere, Embolotherium andrewsi(known colloquially as 'the thunder beast') tries to protect the ailing juvenile, dispersing two formidable Sarkastodon species. There standing in the foreground, frighteningly near to you, is Andrewsarchus mongoliensis who's also been lured to the sight of the weakened juvenile, but somewhat hesitating.

   

Estimated weights for each mega species in this reconstruction are: about 3 tons for the adult thunder beast, 300 plus kgs for the giant oxyeanid, and about 750 kgs for the jaw monster.

   

:Notes on morphologies:

 

I've tried to reflect on these images, several latest updates regarding their morphologies.

   

Andrewsarchus mongoliensis

 

Andrewsarchus sp. for instance, is now considered to have been more closely related to Entelodontids rather than to old Mesonychids, but perhaps being greatly more carnivorous and thus the living animal must've looked more like 'carnivores', superficially. Andrewsarchus sp. is ofcourse not true entelodont but I guess probably just as tall at the shoulder and similarly heavy, since being more carnivorous doesn't necessarily mean that it had to be a swift hunter.

   

Sarkastodon mongoliensis

 

The matter of the post-cranial morphology of Sarkastodon is not yet resolved either, but by judging from the partial cranial and concerning its phylogenetic relationship, the giant oxyeanid's posture should've been similar to smaller Patriofelis sp., being very long bodied, standing low to the ground plus its limbs being short and stocky as in mustelids(this idea is not mine originally but I've got it straight from the fellow deviant blazze92's skeletal reconstruction).

   

Embolotherium andrewsi

 

As to Embolotherium's conspicuous Y-shape horn, I've applied the interpretation by scientists at the American Natural History Museum that it was in fact, not a horn but sort of extended nasal bone that supported enormous nasal cavity, being used as a resonating chamber. → (research.amnh.org/paleontology/embolotherium-andrewsi)

 

In the living animal therefore, this 'resonating chamber' must have looked more like a part of the muzzle rather than a clearly separated horn but extended well above the nostrils. Very bizarre looking anyways!

 

The size of brontotheres has also been reconsidered lately and becomes more modest as opposed to the old 5 tons estimation.

There may be just slight discrepancy regarding periods of existence between the two largest Eocene meat eaters, but please don't touch that. =(

 

A moment after this, Andrewsarchus will immediately turn around and attack the running Sarkastodon with the immense 80 cm jaws(arguably the strongest bite force ever in the entire land mammals). Which do you think will survive the deadly Eocene fight?

Andrewsarchus (Andrewsarchus mongoliensis) is an extinct mammal that lived during the Eocene epoch, roughly between 45 and 36 million years ago. It had a long snout with large, sharp teeth and flat cheek teeth that may have been used to crush bones. Andrewsarchus is known only from a single enormous skull (32.8 in long and 22 in wide) which was discovered in the Gobi desert in 1923, this skull is now on display at the American Museum of Natural History. The beast is estimated to have had a length from the snout to the back of the pelvis at about 11 feet and a height from the ground to the shoulder or middle of the back of about 6 feet making it one of the largest land carnivorous mammals ever known! Andrewsarchus possessed some of the strongest jaws ever evolved in a land mammal, able to bite through large bones if needed leading to many debates over whether this was a hunter or a scavenger. I think it goes without saying... this is one prehistoric beast you wouldn't want to run into if you traveled back in time!

De Messelgroeve (Duits: Grube Messel) is een fossielenvindplaats in het dorpje Messel nabij Darmstadt in Duitsland. De groeve meet circa 1000 bij 700 meter.

 

Op deze plek werd vanaf het einde van de negentiende eeuw oliehoudende schalie gewonnen. Ondanks dat het eerste fossiel, een krokodil, er al in 1875 ontdekt werd, bleef de groeve het terrein van de mijnbouw. Toen het winnen van olie op deze manier niet meer rendabel was, besloot men het gebied te veranderen in een vuilstortplaats. Protesten van archeologen en burgers wisten dit te verhinderen, en sinds 1991 is het beschermd terrein.

 

In 1995 werd het toegevoegd aan de Werelderfgoedlijst, als de beste en rijkste fossielenvindplaats ter wereld met overblijfselen uit het Eoceen.

Oorsprong

 

De oliehoudende schalie werd tijdens het Ypresien, ongeveer 50 tot 47 miljoen jaar geleden als klei afgezet in een meer gelegen in een subtropisch woud. De klei en de zuurstofarme bodem van het meer zorgden voor bijzondere conservering van het ecosysteem uit die tijd: vissen, planten, insecten, amfibieën, reptielen, vogels en zoogdieren. Veel van de dierenskeletten zijn in hun geheel bewaard gebleven. Bijzonder is ook dat bij fossielen weke delen bewaard zijn gebleven, zoals de staartveren van vogels, de vachtomtrek en maaginhoud van zoogdieren en kevers met gekleurde dekschilden.

 

Een hypothese voor de vondst van zoveel verschillende diersoorten in verschillende lagen van de formatie stelt dat het meer het toneel is geweest van een natuurramp. Verondersteld wordt dat het gebied, dat tijdens het Eoceen vulkanisch was, een ontgassingen van het kratermeer gekend heeft. Dit zou een verklaring zijn voor het bewaard blijven van verschillende soorten vleermuizen (die letterlijk uit de lucht kwamen vallen) en ook de compleetheid en dichtheid van de skeletten van de dieren kan verklaren. Op 26 augustus 1986 is er in het vulkaanmeer Nyos in Kameroen iets soortgelijks gebeurd: er kwam plotseling een enorme hoeveelheid koolstofdioxide vrij in een alles verstikkende gaswolk, waarbij meer dan 1700 mensen de dood vonden.

 

Gevonden fossielen

 

Sinds het begin van de jaren zeventig werd er intensief naar fossielen gezocht. Duizenden fossielen werden gevonden, zowel door amateurs als wetenschappers. Er wordt nog steeds gegraven. Inmiddels zijn meer dan 130 diersoorten bekend uit Messel, waaronder meer dan veertig soorten zoogdieren. Vrijwel alle zoogdierfossielen zijn complete of bijna complete gearticuleerde skeletten. Veel geslachten zijn nauw verwant aan zoogdieren uit de Bridger-formatie in Wyoming, die van ongeveer dezelfde ouderdom is. Een vergelijkbare fauna als die van Messel is gevonden in het Geiseldal in Saksen-Anhalt.

 

Meest in het oog springend zijn de Messel-(dwerg)paardjes (geslacht Propalaeotherium). De Propalaeotherium parvulum had een schouderhoogte van slechts 30-35 centimeter, en de Propalaeotherium hassiacum was ongeveer 55-60 centimeter hoog. Beide paardjes hadden vier hoeven aan hun voorbenen, en drie hoeven aan de achterbenen (Wikipedia).

From the American Museum of Natural History. Once thought as a mesonychid and a link to them and the whales, Andrewsarchus is now thought to be an artiodactyl, though it's still shares relation with the whales.

Barinasuchus arveloi, the largest terrestrial crocodylomorph ever known, and quite possibly the largest terrestrial carnivorous creature in the entire Cenozoic, ambush attacking Xenastrapotherium sp., the black rhino sized astrapotherid in the middle Miocene northern South American landscape. Three Charactosuchus fieldsi, Gharial like ancient crocodylid, can also be seen resting near the river bank.

This scene is inspired by Zimices' suggestion that Barinasuchus arveloi and Xenastrapotherium sp. shared the same habitats during the middle Miocene northern South America(present day Colombia and Peru)

 

: Description :

According to 'Cenozoic dinosaurs in South America' Molnar et al.(2016), the preserved snout part of the largest Barinasuchus specimen known('MAAT-0260') gave the estimated total skull length of 950-1100 mm, comparable to that of moderate sized Tyrannosaur and larger, far more massive than that of Andrewsarchus mongoliensis. Sebecosuchians(terrestrial crocodylomorphs) seem to have possessed very large cranial relative to the body length and based on closely related Stratiotosuchus' postcranial, the snout-tail tip length of MAAT-0260 is estimated to have been 6.3 m or more. The paper also provides the estimated body mass of Barinasuchus at 1610 - 1720 kgs(c. 1.6 - 1.7 tonnes) but these must be considered highly approximate, since no postcranial remains of the species discovered. Still, I guess it should be probable that such large sebecosuchian could've reached well over a ton. The authors believe B. arveloi was a significant predator of its time, likely 'an ecological vicar of non-avian theropod dinosaurs'.

 

Even though Xenastrapotherium sp. was fairly large astrapotherid that rivaled the modern black rhino in size, it couldn't have stood a chance against these laterally compressed, massive jaws equipped with bladed, theropod-like teeth!
