Bezigheden van de Maatschappij
Het gebouw is ontworpen door de architecten L. Beirer en J.J. Bekker in neorenaissancestijl. Op het schilderij in de verzameling van het Amsterdam Museum is de Gehoorzaal te zien waar voorzitter F.C. Tromp die dag een rede hield met de titel: ‘De arbeid is het eenige middel tot geluk en tevredenheid’. De Maatschappij hield zich onder andere bezig met het oprichten van ambachtsscholen. Ook begon de Maatschappij als eerste met een straatreinigingsdienst, die later overgenomen werd door de gemeente. Het gebouw kreeg na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verschillende bestemmingen en stond enkele jaren leeg tot het in 1985 werd verbouwd tot theater De Doelenzaal.
