The marsh at Huntley Meadows Park echoed to the roar of American bullfrogs. Most of the time you could not see them but this large guy swam up to near where I was, so I managed to capture his image and reflection among the aquatic plants.

The American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is a large frog that lives in wetlands and is native to eastern North America. Adult bullfrogs may weigh as much as 1.8 lbs and attain body lengths of up to 8 inches. Males are larger than females and have yellow coloured throats as shown in the photo. Bullfrogs are opportunistic predators with voracious appetites. They consume a wide variety of prey including small rodents, birds, bats, lizards, snakes, fish, other frogs and toads as well as various invertebrates, such as crustaceans (crayfish), molluscs (snails) and insects.

American Bullfrog, Wildwood Lake, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Title quote from the movie Titanic.

As the lake water evaporates, the various creatures calling it home have to adapt. This Bullfrog sits in the limited shade on a hot morning. It will soon commence eating and interacting with and calling out to its fellow Bullfrogs, in the low groan that is incorporated in the Québécois French name Ouaouaron. The name is borrowed from the Wendat, also known as Wendat Huron, an indigenous nation spreading at times from Quebec City (where they continue to live on an urban territory) to as far west as Lake Simcoe.

The heat and dryness this summer has exposed more lake bottom, and driven frogs and fish into pools - where, needless to say, they are more vulnerable to the many Herons and Egrets that hunt on the Lake.

I came across this American Bullfrog this morning at Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, Missouri, USA and we both froze and conducted a mutual staredown until the sunlight peeked over the trees to light up her face so I could get the shot I wanted. After our brief photo shoot I succumbed to the staredown master and left her to enjoy the rest of the morning in private.
