To celebrate the 1000 year anniversary of Iceland’s parliament, Alþingi, this building was built for the festivities at Þingvellir in 1930. The building has served as the official summer residence of the Prime Minister since 1974.

Þingvellir (anglicized as Thingvellir) is an important site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. It lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; the crack between the two continental plates is visible running through the center of this image. It is at the northern end of Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland.

Alþingi (Althing in English), the Icelandic Parliament, was established at Þingvellir in 930, and remained there until 1798. Þingvellir National Park (or Thingvellir National Park) was founded in 1930, marking the 1,000th anniversary of the Althing. It was later expanded to protect natural phenomena in the surrounding area, and became a World Heritage Site in 2004.

The separating of the North American and European tectonic plates is taking place here, leaving many walls, cliffs, and something Iceland has no shortage an iconic waterfall. Öxarárfoss was even featured on the cover of Nine Inch Nails' album, The Fragile.

"No single place epitomizes the history of Iceland and the Icelandic nation better than Þingvellir (Thingvellir) by the river Öxará."

"At Þingvellir - literally "Parliament Plains" - the Alþing (Althing) general assembly was established around 930 and continued to convene there until 1798."

"Major events in the history of Iceland have taken place at Þingvellir and therefore the place is held in high esteem by all Icelanders."

"Today Þingvellir is a protected national shrine. According to the law, passed in 1928, the protected area shall always be the property of the Icelandic nation, under the preservation of the Alþing."

Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is a historic site and national park in Iceland, east of Reykjavík.

It's known for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland's parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries.

On the site are the Þingvellir Church and the ruins of old stone shelters.

The park sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagjá fault.

A peaceful place to walk around and take in the beauty of our world.

The life on Iceland is inextricably linked with the role of nature. The volcanic activity on the island has a big influence on the life the people can have. Even throughout the history there are stories showing the entanglement of life with the surrounding nature.

One of these stories is about the annual parliament of Iceland. A gathering of the inhabitants of the island, starting from 930 till the end of the 18th century. The Alþingi is one of the oldest surviving parliaments of the world. It started on a place called the Þingvellir, the assembly fields.

This was not an ordinary area in the country. It is located at a riff along the boundary of the tectonic plates of Northern America and Eurasia. It is not clear why they choose this place, and if they were aware of the extraordinary spot they picked. Perhaps the riff formed a good shelter, or the acoustic was perfect for the speaker of the parliament. In any case is it a remarkable story of human history and nature... (1/2)

(Thingvellir)

In the heart of the Thingvellir National Park stands Thingvallakirkja church. One of the oldest church sites in Iceland but according to sources Olaf King of Norway gave timber for a church in Thingvellir in year 1015. Thingvellir was also of course the site for the Althing, the Icelandic parliament assembly for almost 900 years. The current church is built and concecrated in 1859 and today it is in great condition both inside and out.

Iceland really is a country of amazing sights. Þingvellir (anglicised as Thingvellir, is a national park in the municipality of Bláskógabyggð in southwestern Iceland, about 40 km northeast of Iceland's capital, Reykjavik. Þingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological significance, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. Being as close to Reykjavik as it is there are usually hordes of tourists all over this site.

The Þingvellir area forms part of the volcanic fissure running right through Iceland. This zone is part of the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which extend the length of the Atlantic from north to south. This might look like a pile of old rocks but in reality it marks the edge of the North American Continental Plate.

Þingvellir is associated with the Althing, the national parliament of Iceland, which was established at the site in 930 AD. Sessions were held at the location until 1798.

Þingvellir National Park was founded in 1930, marking the one-thousandth anniversary of the Althing. The park was later expanded to protect the diverse and natural phenomena in the surrounding area, and was designated as a World Heritage Site in 2004.

The statue of Leif Eriksson in front of the Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavik was donated by the USA in 1930 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the Althing (artist: Alexander Stirling Calder).

Leif Eriksson, born in ca. 970 CE, was an explorer who founded a settlement in Newfoundland, Canada, making him the first European to set foot on the North American continent, about half a millenium before Columbus.

In post-production, I reduced the contrast of the church building in the background to enhance the mystical impression.

From the perspective from which you see the statue framed by the church window, you inevitably see tree branches protruding from the side of the picture. In order not to distract the eye from the essentials, I removed these branches - in Photoshop with the help of the Clone Stamp tool and without any AI.

Þingvellir is a historically and geologically significant site in southwestern Iceland, located about 40 kilometers northeast of Reykjavík. It is one of the country’s most important cultural landmarks and forms part of the popular Golden Circle route. Þingvellir is both a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its unique combination of natural features and its central role in Iceland’s history.

The area lies within a rift valley created by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it one of the few places in the world where this geological boundary is clearly visible on land. Over time, the shifting plates have formed dramatic fissures, lava fields, and clear freshwater springs, including the well-known Silfra fissure, where the two continental plates can be observed diverging. The landscape is characterized by rugged cliffs, open plains, and the nearby Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake.

Historically, Þingvellir holds exceptional importance as the site of the Althing, one of the world’s oldest existing parliaments, established around the year 930 during the early period of Icelandic settlement. For centuries, chieftains and representatives from across the island gathered here annually to make laws, settle disputes, and conduct assemblies, making Þingvellir the political and social heart of medieval Iceland. The location was chosen for its accessibility and natural amphitheater-like setting created by the surrounding cliffs.

Throughout the centuries, Þingvellir has remained a symbol of Icelandic identity and independence. It was here that Iceland formally declared independence from Denmark in 1944, reinforcing its deep national significance. Today, the park is protected for both its cultural heritage and its distinctive geological environment, attracting visitors interested in history, nature, and photography. The combination of tectonic activity, historical legacy, and scenic beauty makes Þingvellir one of the most iconic and meaningful locations in Iceland.

Cette convergence nette d'une verticale et d'obliques est pour moi le symbole d'une volonté de bonne entente démocratique, qui me rappelle l'Althing, le parlement islandais fondé à Þingvellir en 930. D'où ce titre.

For me, this clear convergence of a vertical and obliques is a symbol of democratic goodwill, reminiscent of the Althing, the Icelandic parliament founded in Þingvellir in 930. Hence the title.

Continuing on our way around the so-called 'Golden Circle' near Reykjavik, Iceland we arrived at Thingvellir National Park. It's not as spectacular on Gullfoss or Geysir but I found the place very photogenic, maybe not least because it actually stopped raining / sleeting / snowing for more than ten minutes.......

A set of falls at Þingvellir (pronounced thing'vellir). It is the site of the first assembly government in Iceland called the Althing that was first held in 930AD and continued on this site until 1798. It is on the mid Atlantic ridge, so the cliff (on the north American side) is moving away at 2cm per year.

Tip for today :

Although this shot is dramatic due to the sky, the leading lines, the sun behind the model, the angle etc. one of the most important things is actually a very small detail.

The red tie.

Without that the image (at least for me) would have been a lot less striking.

Remember that color details in a shot are very important. Look at the old masters like Caravaggio for inspiration.

For more tips/techniques etc check out www.frankdoorhof.com and browse through the many blogposts, instructional videos etc. or get my book "mastering the model shoot"

Taken from the Brussels Airline website.

"Ceci n’est pas un avion." It is a lot more than just an aircraft. It is a dedication to one of the greatest Belgian artists, René Magritte. A Belgian icon with the gift to look at things like no one else could and who revealed the world to us from a different angle. This is why we have created Magritte, an Airbus A320 in honour of the painter.

Covered with the famous clouds and birds taken from three of René Magritte’s paintings, this surrealistic aircraft will paint the European skies for 6 years to come.

René Magritte was a Belgian surrealist artist who had the rare gift to look at things in a very unique way. His works are praised all over the world today, and can be described as illusions and dreams roaming freely where the notion of “time” is absent. This is similar to what we experience when we are up in the sky.

Magritte, the second Brussels Airlines A320 in a series of aircrafts dedicated to Belgian icons, was welcomed on 21 March 2016. It was made possible thanks to a collaboration between the airline and the Magritte Foundation.

Indeed, if René Magritte were to have seen this plane, he would probably have said "This is not an airplane - this is only the image of an airplane."

Þingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance in Iceland.

Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is where the Althing - an open-air assembly that represented the whole of Iceland (parliament) - was established in 930 and continued to meet until 1798.

The present Thingvellir Church (Þingvallakirkja), a protected building, dates from the 1850s, but it is on the site of a much larger church dating from the early 11th century. The neighbouring Thingvellir Farm is a relatively modern building in classic Icelandic form, which now serves as a country residence for the President of Iceland.

The continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates can be clearly seen in the cracks or faults which traverse the region.
