This mushroom caught my eye while exploring a nature preserve. I'd not seen anything like it before. Thought it was growing out of dirt, but experts told me there had to be a decaying tree root under the surface, it grows off decaying hardwood. The Japanese call this genus of fungi reishi & they use it in alternative medicine for lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow among other things. New species for me.

Otherwise known as Lingzhi or Reishi - this mushroom is a medicinal mushroom native to Asia. It's natural alternative-medicinal uses range from general health and wellbeing, to specific boosts to immune system and lung-function. Hair-loss is also claimed to be another benefit of this mushroom, through it's numerous bioactive compounds, three of which work together to stimulate keratin production, the main fibrous protein hair is made of.
