Mayon Volcano, also known as Mount Mayon, is an active volcano in the province of Albay, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Renowned as the "perfect cone" because of its almost symmetric conical shape, the mountain was declared a national park and a protected landscape on July 20, 1938, the first in the country. It was reclassified a Natural Park and renamed Mayon Volcano Natural Park in the year 2000.

Mayon Volcano is the main landmark of Albay Province, Philippines, rising 2,462 metres (8,077 ft) from the shores of the Gulf of Albay about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) away

Mayon is a classic stratovolcano (composite) type of volcano with a small central summit crater. The cone is considered the world's most perfectly formed volcano for its symmetry, which was formed through layers of pyroclastic surges and lava flows from past eruptions and erosion. The upper slopes of the basaltic-andesitic volcano are steep averaging 35–40 degrees.

Like other volcanoes located around the Pacific Ocean, Mayon is a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is located on the eastern side of Luzon, near the Philippine Trench which is the convergent boundary where the Philippine Sea Plate is driven under the Philippine Mobile Belt. When a continental plate or belt of continental fragments meets an oceanic plate, the lighter continental material overrides the oceanic plate, forcing it down into the Earth's mantle and melting it. Magma may be forced through weaknesses in the continental crust caused by the collision of the tectonic plates. One such exit point is Mayon.

Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines having erupted over 49 times in the past 400 years. The first record of a major eruption was witnessed in February 1616 by Dutch explorer Joris van Spilbergen who recorded it on his log in his circumnavigation trip around the world. The first eruption of which there is an extended account was the six-day event of July 20, 1766.

Mayon Volcano is the main landmark of Albay Province, Philippines. Rising over 8,000 feet above Albay Gulf, the perfectly symmetrical cone of the stratovolcano dominates the landscapes of the cities of Legazpi, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao, Tabaco, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo.

Mayon is also a very active volcano; it erupted most recently in 2013 killing five and injuring seven.

Local legend says that Mayon is a beautiful woman and that if she shows her face to you, she is pleased. If not, beware!

Busay Falls is tucked away in a forested mountain in the quaint town of Malilipot in Albay, Philippines. The seven-tiered falls are about 5 kilometers from Tabaco City proper, 20 kilometers north of Legaspi City and is easily accessible by both private and public transport. It is considered one of the highest waterfalls in the country descending in stages from a height of 250 meters cascading into seven small pools.

The Cagsawa Ruins (also spelled as Kagsawa or Cagsaua) are the remnants of an 16th-century Franciscan church, the Cagsawa church. It was built in 1587 but was burned down by the marauding Dutch in 1636. However, it was reconstructed again in 1724 by Fr. Francisco Blanco. In February 1, 1814, Mayon Volcano caused its most violent and deadly eruption that engulfed the surrounding houses and killed nearly 2,000 people who took refuge inside the church. Only the belfry of the Cagsawa church remains as a grim and silent testimony of that fateful day. For almost two hundred years, it has withstood the test of time and the elements to become one of the most recognizable landmarks of Albay Province. The ruins are located in Barangay Busay, Cagsawa, in the municipality of Daraga, Albay, Philippines.

Kuya Bulan was saving money so he can open his own bank account someday. He's got almost P3,000 after a year but when he learned that I will be going to Albay, he asked me if he can come too and if his savings is enough for a plane ticket. Yes he can come and chipped in some for his plane ticket. It was his first plane ride. And my moment of realization on how he's grown up.

Almost always blanketed by clouds, the tip of Mayon's near perfect cone is a sight to behold. On our last afternoon atop Lignon Hill, we were lucky to glimpse it for about fifteen minutes before it was shrouded once again.

We went to Legaspi City for a wedding shoot in Misibis Bay Island Resort, last January 8, 2011. On our way to Legaspi, we stopped a lot to take some photos. The whole trip started when we left Manila at January 7 and returned on the 13th.

These photos document the 6th day of our 7 day adventure!

After a very dismal evening spent in Hotel Venezia, we woke up to a good breakfast! Good enought to start our day!

Off we head towards Naga, but this time passing counter clockwise Mayon Volcano, via Tabaco! Given more time I would like to have passed by Buhi lake, home of the worlds smallest commercial fish! The highway was long and empty! We passed through mountains and along the way saw many local kids who looked like they were on their way to, and from, school, and also a lot of kids who looked like they didn't belong to any school! www.manilatimes.net/index.php/opinion/columnist/1176-worl...

Before reaching the mountain hiway, we passed by the once famous Tiwi Hot Springs, located in the town of Tiwi. Today the spring pools are still existing, but not anymore heated, because of the geothermal plant nearby that uses the heat energy for creating electricity.

Somewhere around cloud height, we asked a local for a photo, and he demanded a ridiculously high price. We finally gave him only P50.00, but this woman suddenly came from out of nowhere and started begging for money, actually more like demanding us to give her P150.00!

The route was very scenic, with the ocean on our right, with large waves and strong winds! The drive was very smooth and easy, with hardly any cars or vehicles using the highway.

We arrived Naga and decided to pass by their famous cathedral. I can't seem to find the name on the web so I have no idea which church or cathedral we went to. We also accidentally found a small and really really old-looking church that we were able to photograph on the outside. It's made of bricks. I would appreciate if anyone can give me the name of these two churches.

We had a quick lunch, or snack, then headed towards Daet through the most beautiful hiway I've even seen in our country! The trees were beautiful, the road was beautiful, the scenes were beautiful, everything was beautiful!

Arriving Daet, we were faced with a problem, a place to stay. After driving to far distances reaching over 20 kilometers from Daet for an appropriate resort, a kind security guard told us about Catherine's Resort in Bagasbas, near the airport, and only 3 kilometers from the city. So far, Catherine's Resort is the second best place to rest in this trip, but the best resort so far! A real bargain at around P2,400 a night, with breakfast for two, and the food they serve is EXQUISITE! I cannot find any website of the resort, but here's a wiki map of it: wikimapia.org/17487213/Catherine-s-Resort-and-Restaurant

I hope you enjoy the photos. 8-)

Many of the provincial churches in the Philippines are so wonderfully bright that they stand out on dull overcast days

We went to Legaspi City for a wedding shoot in Misibis Bay Island Resort, last January 8, 2011. On our way to Legaspi, we stopped a lot to take some photos. We left Manila January 7 and returned on the 13th.

This is the third day of our road trip and we travelled all the way from Legaspi to Matnog. When we found out that the RORO Montenegro Ferry costs less than a thousand pesos, we decided to cross over to Samar, via San Isidro. After crossing the San Bernardino strait, we drove all the way from Samar to Tacloban through the San Juanico bridge (longest bridge in the Philippines), and stayed overnight in Leyte Park Hotel.

In Matnog's terminal, the "fixer" asked for P1,600, but not including tips yet. It was shocking to experience everyone asking for tips, from the police, to the people guiding us into the boat, even the seaman who helped us enter the ferry, and another seaman who helped us park inside the Ferry, both asked for tips. I spent a little close to P2,500 all in all. Take note, the "fixers" have Id's, and they actually act and look like employees of the terminal. The Matnog terminal police are corrupt, even if they didn't see me or accept any payment personally, I was allowed to come in their building, sign the form, and leave, no questions asked. Apparently, a special service given to those who "pay".

I asked the "fixer" if it's like that in San Isidro on my way back (so I could prepare myself financially), and he said it's even worse. Surprise surprise, we didn't spend a cent for anything other than the terminal fee and the RORO Ferry costs, around P1,100 all in all. The guards and pier staff even told us that corruption is not allowed in San Isidro.

The people in Matnog are the most corrupt I have ever met, and I am comparing them to all the people I have met in my travels around the world! I thought they have changed from the last time I travelled through Matnog around the 1990's, but I guess some things don't change.

Anyway, the RORO Ferry trip is only an hour and a half long, faster than if we took the Allen Ferry (about two and a half hours), plus San Isidro is about 60 kilometers closer to Calbayog than Allen.

I hope you enjoy these photos. 8-)

"Daragang Magayon," Lady Beautiful, in all her majestic glory. What a breathtaking sight indeed.

The Mayon Volcano is the most active volcano in the Philippines. It is located in the province of Albay in the Bicol Region of Luzon. The name Mayon comes from Magayon, the Bicol word for beautiful. Beautiful is an understatement. Mayon takes your breath away; but the beauty belies a deadly and destructive force. This was my farewell shot of it from the plane.
