Belly dance also known as M'alayah in the Gulf region, is a Middle Eastern dance that originated in Egypt, which features movements of the hips, buttocks and torso. A Western-coined exonym, it is also referred to as Middle Eastern dance or Arabic dance. It has evolved to take many different forms depending on the country and region, both in costume and dance style, with the styles and costumes of Egypt being the most recognized worldwide due to Egyptian cinema. Belly dancing in its various forms and styles is popular across the globe where it is taught by a trainer of schools of dance. S_12052

Title: Inventors and Inventions, Real and Imagined

Theme: Education

Materials: Students created their pieces on paper with fabric crayons and disperse dye. They then put their work on a hot press, covered it with fabric, and allowed the heat from the hot press to lift the color from the paper onto the fabric.

About: I chose this Dream Theme primarily because it would be exhibited at the Thomas Edison Historic National Park, which is close enough to my school so that there would be a chance of taking my students on a field trip so that they could see the exhibited work. It was also close enough so that students could take their families individually to see the exhibit.

Additionally, I liked the theme - Thomas Edison used his imagination to create many, many things - of course, he had a scientific mind that enabled him to make these things, and to make them effective and work successfully. Similarly, in art, I believe that people need to know how to draw before they can create more conceptual pieces; you need the basics underpinning all work so that the composition and form are compelling.

I was excited to be able to talk about Edison and other inventors, and to get the students thinking about what it might be like to actually invent something, what it would take to create something from one's imagination. To translate all of that into a visual image was a challenge that I was happy to present to my students. Hopefully, they felt some inspiration from this project.
