De withandgibbon is een tenger gebouwd dier, met - net als andere gibbonsoorten - lange armen en geen staart. Ze zijn gemiddeld 5,5 kg zwaar en de lichaamslengte is 42 tot 59 cm.[2] In tegenstelling tot de andere gibbonsoorten is de kleur van de pels zeer variabel. Er zijn dieren die helemaal zwart of donkerbruin zijn, maar ook lichtbruine en zandkleurige dieren komen voor. De handen, voeten en een krans van beharing rond de ogen, neus en mond zijn wit.
De vrouwtjes zijn na 8 tot 10 jaar geslachtsrijp, de mannetjes na 8 tot 12 jaar. Ze krijgen om de drie tot vijf jaar één jong. De groepsgrootte varieert per ondersoort. In het noorden gemiddeld 4,5 individuen en in het zuiden van Malakka gemiddeld 2,7.[1] Het fluiten / roepen van de gibbons is vaak een waarschuwing voor kleinere zoogdieren dat er een roofdier aan kan komen. Deze zoogdieren zijn graag in de omgeving van de gibbons en hebben op deze wijze hun eigen alarmsysteem.

They weigh an average of 5.5 kg and their body length is 42 to 59 cm.[2] Unlike other gibbon species, the color of the fur is very variable. There are animals that are completely black or dark brown, but light brown and sand-colored animals are also found. The hands, feet and a ring of hair around the eyes, nose and mouth are white.
The females reach sexual maturity after 8 to 10 years, the males after 8 to 12 years. They have one young every three to five years. Group size varies per subspecies. In the north an average of 4.5 individuals and in the south of Malacca an average of 2.7.[1] The whistling/calling of the gibbons is often a warning to smaller mammals that a predator may be approaching. These mammals like to be in the vicinity of the gibbons and thus have their own alarm system.

Het doel van Doel als doel…
Waarom zou je als doorgewinterde urbexer een bezoek aan Doel willen brengen? Doel, een klein plaatsje aan de linker oever van de (wester)schelde, op de hoek van de haven van Antwerpen. Wie heeft er niet van gehoord? In 1999 is de bewoners medegedeeld dat het plaatsje in 2020 met de grond gelijk wordt gemaakt om de haven te kunnen uitbreiden. Vanaf dat moment zijn steeds meer inwoners het gebied ontvlucht. De huizen als prooi voor de natuur, inbrekers, krakers, vandalen, graffitispuiters en urbexers achterlatend.
Als je de verschillende verhalen op internet er op naslaat, lees je dat het ondertussen wel door heel veel urbexers is bezocht, soms in groepen van 20 man tegelijk. Het nieuwe is eraf, het is niet interessant meer. Des te interessanter voor mij en mijn urbexmaatje. Je moet er ten slotte een keertje geweest zijn, toch?
We hebben bewust een dag in het voorjaar uitgezocht, niet te warm en naar verwachting een beetje regenachtig. Dat scheelt enorm als je ter plaatse niet teveel andere fotografen wilt tegenkomen. Doel ligt redelijk dichtbij, een dikke 100 kilometer rijden, en we reden dan ook al vrij vroeg het plaatsje binnen. Wat direct opvalt is de graffiti op bijna alle huizen, de dichtgespijkerde panden, de brede straten en de stilte, de leegte…
De stilte en leegte wordt af en toe onderbroken door de stadsbus die nog steeds braaf zijn rondjes rijdt en bij elke bushalte stopt zonder dat er iemand in of uitstapt. Ook de postbus die nog steeds aan de gevel van het dichtgespijkerde gesticht hangt wordt nog dagelijks geleegd alsof er niets aan de hand is. Ook de politie doet nog haar plicht. We waren het plaatsje nog niet binnengereden of we werden achtervolgt door een politiebusje. Nadat we een parkeerplaats hadden gevonden bij de kerk reed het busje ons langzaam voorbij. Het was te verwachten dat ze, na een rondje door het plaatsje, nog wel een keertje langs zouden komen, dus we besloten de fotoapparatuur nog even in de auto te laten en, zo nonchalant mogelijk, een wandeling te gaan maken door de straten van Doel. En jawel, de politie reed weer langs. Het is moeilijk om je onopvallend te gedragen, niemand gaat daar voor z’n plezier wandelen en je komt er zeker niet helemaal voor uit Nederland. Kennelijk was dit hun laatste rondje want pas veel later op de dag reden ze weer rond. Het lijkt op een vaste patrouille die overigens niet veel voorstelt.
Met de rugzakken om en de camera’s op de schouder trekken we het stadje in. Weer vallen de brede straten op en de leegte. Het zijn natuurlijk helemaal geen brede straten maar het is er wel leeg, er staan namelijk nergens, bijna nergens, auto’s geparkeerd. Er loopt niemand op straat, hier en daar een loslopende hond en kat maar dat is ook alles. Elke auto die langsrijdt is een bezienswaardigheid en is voor ons reden om even weg te duiken. Hele straten met verlaten panden en soms, heel soms, een bewoond huis. Soms herkenbaar aan een auto voor de deur, het ontbreken van graffiti op de muren, behalve als de bewoners er zelf een protesttekst op hebben geschilderd, levende plantjes voor de ramen of een simpele tekst op de ruiten dat het pand nog bewoond is.
Op de achtergrond zie je de koeltorens van de kerncentrale van Doel. In gedachte is een relatie met Tjernobyl snel gemaakt. Ook Doel lijkt in één keer verlaten door al haar bewoners als gevolg van een nucleaire ramp. Even schiet het door je gedachte dat het misschien echt zo is, straling kun je niet zien…
Aan de straatkant is weinig te beleven voor urbexers. Alles is goed afgesloten. Sommige panden zelfs met metalen platen. Een ander verhaal wordt het als je de huizen vanuit de achtertuintjes benadert. Alles is open! Je hoeft nergens “in te breken”. Af en toe over een hekje klimmen of over een afvalberg heen stappen is voldoende om vrijwel elk huis van binnen te kunnen bekijken. En dat “bekijken” hebben kennelijk al heel wat mensen voor ons gedaan. Veel is gesloopt en beklad met leuzen en tekeningen. Enkele panden bevatten nog delen van huisraad, een omgevallen kast, een zonnebank, een kapotte stoel of een lege vrieskist. Andere panden zijn helemaal leeg en geheel gestript van alles wat een beetje waardevol was.
Het enige deel van het stadje dat nog intact is en er netjes bijstaat is de kerk en het kerkhof. De kerk staat een beetje scheef maar de klok loopt nog op tijd en af en toe zijn de kerkklokken hoorbaar boven het irritante geluid wat afkomstig is van de activiteiten in het havengebied. Een constante lage brom is hoorbaar evenals het piepende geluid van vrachtwagens die achteruit rijden. Maar je hoort geen mensen. Er zijn geen mensen.
We proberen zoveel mogelijk de moderne nieuwe huizen te vermijden. Onze interesse gaat meer uit naar panden waar nog zaken te fotograferen zijn waar het verleden van afstraalt en waar aan de stofwebben te zien is dat de tijd heeft stilgestaan.
Om 13.00 uur gaat een sirene af. Schuilend voor de regen zitten we net te eten in een van de panden. Het zal wel etenstijd zijn in de haven, is de eerste gedachte. Dan bekruipt ons toch een vreemd gevoel. Het is precies het sirene geluid wat we in Nederland op de 1e van de maand laten horen. Een snel repeterende alarmtoon. Het is de 26e van de maand. Het lijkt ons geen datum om een alarmsysteem te testen. Er is niemand in de buurt waaraan je kunt merken dat er iets vreemds aan de hand is. We gaan verder met onze boterham en de sirene stopt op een gegeven ogenblik. We besluiten er verder maar geen aandacht aan te besteden. Als het zo vlak naast een kerncentrale misgaat is er toch geen redden meer aan…
We komen in huizen die mooier en groter zijn dan wat wij thuis gewend zijn. Fraaie vrijstaande villa’s in een bosrijke omgeving met mooie bubbelbaden en enorme spiegelwanden. Als schril contrast ontdekken we ook heel kleine pandjes met het toilet in een klein schuurtje buiten.
In een van de huizen staat de kelder onder water. Terwijl ik de trap naar beneden afloop en deels al in het water sta, valt mijn ledlamp uit m’n jaszak. De lamp verdwijnt direct onder water. Een snelle reactie voorkomt dat de batterijen nat worden en er kortsluiting ontstaat.
Later op de dag begint het steeds harder te waaien en te regenen. Overal hoor je ramen en deuren klapperen en dichtslaan. Gordijnen bewegen heen en weer in de wind. De toch al lugubere omgeving wordt er niet vriendelijker op. We worden steeds voorzichtiger. Je weet tenslotte niet of zeker of het de wind is die de geluiden veroorzaakt…
Moe geworden van de huizentocht besluiten we dat het mooi genoeg is geweest. We hebben dan de helft van de huizen bekeken. Waar je in Nederland al blij bent met één pand waar je in kunt, is het hier al snel teveel van het goede en meer van hetzelfde.
Het stadje verlatend rijden we nog even langs de kerncentrale. We realiseren ons dat die centrale wel erg dicht in de buurt van ons eigen huis ligt. Een afstand van nog geen 130 kilometer. Een explosie en een verkeerde windrichting en…

Had the opportunity to visit Norton Hospital this day.
Heart monitor malfunctioned continually. Alarm systems malfunctioned. There was a small fire in one of the labs in the back - employees attempted to conceal that from the Fire Department. The sheets and blankets are not changed prior to bringing in a new patient (note: this was not during a high-traffic time - this was 2016). There were needles and syringes on the floor. Blankets and sheets on cots and beds had fresh blood drops on them from the previous patients. Nothing was sanitized in this hospital room. None of the employees questioned knew what to do in the event of a fire emergency and that was evident when the alarms did sound. They had rent-a-guards doubling as medical personnel on the same shift, who'd spend most of the time texting on their phones. When one of the guards up front was asked about evacuating patients, his response was, "I don't care - do you?" This is a brief recap of just one visit.
Norton's administrative personnel were notified of the above multiple times and did not respond until two years later, and with only a generic "sorry" letter, while never acknowledging what occurred. When contacted by phone, Norton acknowledged they received my complaint yet would not and could not (supposedly) verify what the complaint was. DO NOT visit this hospital if you are concerned for your loved ones care. Fraudulent billing practices, Medicare Fraud. Falsifying/Altering Medical Records. Losing Patient's Property, untrained ER staff.

My sister and I lay on the floor, frozen in place, straining to hear if the creaking will repeat itself. It doesn’t. I glance over my shoulder. Mom and Grandma are still asleep. Dad has not emerged from his bedroom, demanding to know what the hell that sound was.
Only we heard it.
Melinda’s watching me, waiting to see what I do next, so I surprise us both by getting to my feet. She gets to hers and we consider our options. Waking the parents is out of the question. They’ll point to the scary movie, the storm and the late hour and tell us we were hearing things.
No, if we want someone to look around upstairs and make sure everything’s all right, it’ll have to be us.
We make our way through the dining room and kitchen to the bottom of the stairs, tuning on every light as we go. I flip the switch for the upstairs hall light, braced for the sight of a desperate man staring down at us, but the hall is empty.
Slowly, my sister and I climb the stairs, carefully avoiding the seventh step. She stands behind me while I snake an arm into each of our bedrooms to flip on the overhead lights. She stands in the doorway while I check under each of our beds. All’s clear.
I throw open my closet door.
Nothing is standing on the other side, but as I let out the breath I didn’t know I was holding, I notice the attic door is open, just a crack. My arms ripple with gooseflesh. I’m backing away when wind gusting through the attic vent pushes the door open half an inch wider. When it dies down, the door’s laughable latch keeps the door from closing all the way.
I kick it shut. Then I grab the bamboo cane that’s leaning in a corner of the closet and hang it from the top of the attic’s door frame. It’s an alarm system of sorts. If the door opens again, the cane will fall, alerting me.
A short time later I fall into a fitful sleep, unaware that the day about to dawn will be the most terrifying of my life.

My best friend Matt and I are sitting cross-legged on the driveway, conducting experiments with a magnifying glass. It’s another lazy summer day, hot and sunny, with nothing to do but burn holes in stuff. Or get a suntan.
Which is what my sister Melinda is doing. She’s laying on the chaise lounge in the back yard, wearing her bathing suit and movie star sunglasses, soaking up the rays.
Dad’s at work, of course, and Mom and Grandma are off somewhere, probably getting their hair done.
I’m telling Matt about last night. About the creaking sound. About the attic door being opened. About me hanging the bamboo cane in front of the attic door as a sort of alarm system.
Matt’s also 14, so this makes perfect sense to him.
He asks where the cane came from, and I tell him my grandfather, who died before I was born. Grandma says it was his walking stick.
We’re bringing our death beam to bear on a line of marauding ants, when Melinda comes charging around the corner of the house. Her dark eyes flash with fear.
“There’s a man in house,” she says.
Gasping for breath, she explains what happened in short, choppy sentences. She was laying on the chaise longue. She heard a loud bang from inside the house. She looked up. She saw a man’s face in the upstairs bathroom window. He was staring at her.
I immediately think of our dog Rex. He’s still in the house. We have to get him out.
I jump to my feet.

Vroeger werden in Utrecht voor het geven van brandalarm zogenaamde brandbellen gebruikt. Deze bellen stonden op verschillende plaatsen in de stad, meestal op een houten of hardstenen paal. Sommige bellen waren afkomstig uit in de 17e eeuw gesloopte kloosters.
Na het luiden van de bel spoedden de spuitgasten zich naar het dichtstbijzijnde brandspuithuisje (Schalkwijkstraat 30) vanwaar zij uitreden naar de brand.
Op 3 maart 1921 werd een telefonisch alarmsysteem in gebruik genomen. De laatste bel verdween omstreeks 1935 uit het straatbeeld.

Black of toch Rosso Alfa?
Alfa Romeo heeft de configurator live gepubliceerd. Vanuit 360 graden perspectief stel ik "mijn" sportwagen samen. Tijdens het samenstellen in de videoconfigurator speelt de site een video af. Vervolgens ben ik aan de slag met het kiezen van de favoriete kleuren (mijn vrouw en kids geven ongevraagd advies). Wordt het Black, Basalt Grey, White, Madreperla White, Rosso Alfa of toch Rosso Competizione? Wat is onze favoriete kleur (de meiden gaan voor Rosso Alfa en wij jongens gaan voor zwart: vooralsnog is het dus rood...)? En welke van de drie wieldesigns ga ik kiezen (de kids gaan voor de zwarte SuperSport velgen, die zijn cool, dus vooralsnog...)? Vergeet ook zeker niet de kleur van de remklauwen te selecteren (of toch maar liever niet voor 400 euro extra)!
De 240 pk en 350 Nm sterke Alfa Romeo 4C heeft in Nederland een prijskaartje van € 59.650.
Uitrusting en opties (zonder meerprijs):
- Radio, CD, MP3, Navigatie incl. Bluetooth & Aux
Om de klant de mogelijkheid te bieden om het gewicht van de auto te reduceren, wordt de Radio, CD, MP3 speler optioneel aangeboden. Indien ik toch deze optie wil hebben, kan ik deze zonder meerprijs toevoegen aan de configuratie van de auto. Ik kies ervoor om gewicht te sparen! Mijn gezin ziet dit anders... (meer is meer?).
- Handbediende airconditioning
Om de klant de mogelijkheid te bieden om het gewicht van de auto te reduceren, wordt de handbediende airconditioning ook optioneel aangeboden. Indien ik toch deze optie wil hebben, kan ik deze zonder meerprijs toevoegen aan de configuratie van de auto. Ook hier kies ik ervoor om gewicht te sparen. Ook hier gaan we dus voor comfort... (ik ben zelf aanhanger van het minimalisme, dus minder is meer, echter mijn punt niet kunnen overbrengen).
- Elektrisch verstelbare- en verwarmbare buitenspiegels
Om de klant de mogelijkheid te bieden om het gewicht van de auto te reduceren, wordt de elektrisch verstelbare- en verwarmbare buitenspiegels optioneel aangeboden. Indien ik toch deze optie wil hebben, kan ik deze zonder meerprijs toevoegen aan de configuratie van de auto. De spiegels zijn elektrisch verstelbaar middels een kleine joystick (vergelijkbaar met MiTo & Giulietta). De spiegels worden elektrisch verwarmd indien de achterruitverwarming is ingeschakeld. Echter ook hier kies ik ervoor om gewicht te sparen :-) Het gezin kiest anders... (ik ga akkoord, ik heb de kracht niet meer en het gaat om het hogere doel, plaatsen order Alfa 4C).
Uitrusting en opties (meerprijs):
433 - SuperSport 17/18-inch lichtmetalen velgen met matzwarte diamantglans-coating 700 euro extra (keuze van de kids, misschien zou ik toch voor 18/19 inch velgen gaan, kosten ook maar 300 euro extra t.o.v. Keuze kids)
947 - Sport uitlaat systeem (sportief geluid en afwijkend design van de uitlaat) 750 euro extra
912 - Brandblusser 200 euro extra
775 - Accu oplader (druppellader) 200 euro extra
5WL - Rode afdekhoes met Alfa Romeo 4C-logo 300 euro extra
388 - Alarmsysteem incl. reservesleutel met afstandsbediening 600 euro extra
74F - Rosso Alfa (289), Pastellak 450 euro extra (voorkeur van de meiden)

Even snel rekenen dan zie ik dat met de basisprijs en deze opties net boven de 63.000 euro uit kom. Heb ik dan ook alles? Toch nog even kijken... Vandaag ook nog een jonge occasion Porsche 991S gezien, twijfels...
