The monasteries of Meteora, Greece, are built on rocks reaching up to heaven. This is the Agia Triada Monastery, which was used as filmset for the James Bond movie "For Your Eyes Only".
Until sunset it was quite busy at the road around the Meteora monasteries. Then, when the sun had set, (almost) everyone left and it was a special atmosphere, standing there, watching the artificial light getting brighter than the natural light. I could get some sense how the monks and nuns feel, when the real solitude comes. Some nuns went for a short evening walk on the street and greeted friendly. But almost every tourist was already far away, most of them in the village I guess.

Agia Triada, or Chapel of the Holy Trinity, is a Greek orthodox church with commanding views over the northern port town of Karlovasi on the island of Samos, Greece.
Meteora, near Kalambaka, Greece;
The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, pronounced [mɛˈtɛoɾɐ], literally "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" — etymologically related to meteorology) is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka. The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List under criteria I, II, IV, V and VII.
In the 9th century AD, an ascetic group of hermit monks moved up to the ancient pinnacles; they were the first people to inhabit Metéora since the Neolithic Era. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some as high as 1800 ft (550m) above the plain. This great height, combined with the sheerness of the cliff walls, kept away all but the most determined visitors. Initially, the hermits led a life of solitude, meeting only on Sundays and special days to worship and pray in a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dhoupiani.
The exact date of the establishment of the monasteries is unknown. By the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a rudimentary monastic state had formed called the Skete of Stagoi and was centered around the still-standing church of Theotokos (mother of God). By the end of the 12th century, an ascetic community had flocked to Metéora.

the pebbled pathways of a traditional Greek mountain village or the marbled streets of an ancient acropolis is to step back in time. To meander at a leisurely pace through these island chains by boat is to be captivated by the same dramatic landscapes and enchanted islets that make the myths of ancient Greece so compelling. To witness the Mediterranean sun setting on the turquoise sea is to receive one of life’s greatest blessings. ~ Laura Brooks
Perched on the highest hill in Lefkes, there is the majestic Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) Church built in 1830. This beautiful Byzantine church has two bell towers on both sides of the main facade and an archway entrance. The temple is the second largest church on the island of Paros and you can really see it from every corner of the village.
The church is situated only a few minutes walk from the Byzantine square and when you get there, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Lefkes. Don’t forget to take a peek inside to see the church’s intricate ceiling frescoes depicting Saints and its grand, crystal and gold chandeliers.

This is in front of the Agia Triada Monastery at the Akrotiri peninsula in the Chania region on the island Crete, Greece. The monastery was built in the 17th century by two brothers of the Venetian Zangaroli family on the site of a pre-existing church.
Very beautiful scenery and many cats.

The Holy Trinity Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery situated in the Peneas Valley northeast of the town of Kalambaka. It is situated at the top of a rocky precipice over 400 metres high and forms part of 24 monasteries which were originally built at Meteora. The church was constructed between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The monastery was featured in the 1981 James Bond film, For Your Eyes Only. (Explore Apr 16 2014 #16)
This photo was taken by moonlight a couple of hours after midnight. 2 minutes of exposure gave the nice streaks in the clouds.
A glorious sunrise over the south-easternmost subgroup of Meteora, Greece is shot from 3.2 miles away (5.1 km).
The enormous rock formation called Holy Trinity is visible on the left (‘Hagia Triáda’ in Greek). The rock Holy Trinity is 1,870 feet high (570 m). In 1362 AD or earlier a monastery was built close to the rock’s top, at a height of 1,755 feet (535 m). One can use the 149 steps carved in the rock in 1925 to ascend to the Holy Trinity monastery. The monastery is visible on the rock’s top. Next to Holy Trinity one sees the rocks “Nun” (‘Kalógria’ in Greek) and “Nun’s Wall.”
Holy Trinity is one of the many impressive and lofty rock formations whose group is collectively called Meteora: The sandstone megaliths' height varies 1,000-1,800 ft (300-550 m). The rock masses were formed 60 million years ago, are geologically unique and listed in UNESCO world heritage sites.

Greek Orthodox Church celebrates Holy Trinity on Monday following Pentecost or Whit Sunday (Pentecost occurs 50 days after Resurrection, aka Easter). This year, the celebration takes place on June 8, 2020 with a special liturgy held in the monastery.
