The sign on this building reads "OTE", the Greek telecommunications organization, but it is closed and abandoned. In the past, few or no houses in these areas had a telephone, so when residents wanted to contact other areas, they would go to the agency's office and call from there. In fact, most of the time, they had to wait for the employee who was from the other part of the line to call their friend or relative, since they did not have a home appliance either. Or if they had little to say, they would send a telegram. Later, however, the few remaining inhabitants gained their own telephones, and the telegraph went down in history as a method of communication. And so, apart from a cat, a small table and some chairs of a nearby cafe, only the sign remained, to remind that once here was the beating heart of communication with the outside world.

There I was managing my business when suddenly Antony flung open the door, flashed his towel at me to declare he had lost his identity and needed my assistance to find it.

I stared at Antony like he had gone colour blind realizing his trunks didn't match the crocs. I politely advised him that his identity shouldn't be too hard to find, that it was likely somewhere with his socks and keys.

Hearing a growl from beside me, I looked down at Flash and told him patience the Crocs aren't yours (yet, as I know Antony has a million others to replace it if you did chew one)...

Lesson learned... Laughter cures all.

Restored Shipping Agency Office building, 1919, Amsterdam School style of architecture, archtiect: Guillaume La Croix.

The Magnificent Valley of Agabat in The White Desert of Egypt

When the majority of people hear the word “desert” (especially the Sahara desert), all sand dunes comes to mind. This is not so. Only 20% of a desert is made up of dunes as we discovered. The White Desert floor was crusty with white areas of dried saline while other sections had closely packed pebbles and rocks that looked almost like a pavement.

Navigating off-road again for about 9km/6 miles in the soft sand and powdered chalk, Miguel told us to close our eyes and not open them again until he told us. When he said, “You can look now,” we were at the top of a dune looking down into the Valley of Agabat. Agabat means “the Difficult” in Arabic and Dan and I stood there stunned by what lay before us.

A vast panorama of dunes at the base of formations, golden sand and crunchy saline on the desert floor. Softly rounded white cliffs and yellow limestone rocks eroded by desert winds…. Spectacular and breathtaking…

Not all the vehicles can get down into the Valley of Agabat or even out of it but Miguel didn’t blink an eye. He drove the 4×4 to the bottom, parked in the shade of a towering cliff, and waited for us to run down the incline. We sat quietly for quite a while in the shade just taking in the beauty and landscapes that were dramatically different in each direction. Look one way and everything was white with small hills.

Kilmainham Gaol (Irish: Príosún Chill Mhaighneann) is a former prison in Kilmainham, Dublin, Ireland. It is now a museum run by the Office of Public Works, an agency of the Government of Ireland. Many Irish revolutionaries, including the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, were imprisoned and executed in the prison by the orders of the UK Government.

When it was first built in 1796, Kilmainham Gaol was called the "New Gaol" to distinguish it from the old prison it was intended to replace – a noisome dungeon, just a few hundred metres from the present site. It was officially called the County of Dublin Gaol, and was originally run by the Grand Jury for County Dublin.

Originally, public hangings took place at the front of the prison. However, from the 1820s onward very few hangings, public or private, took place at Kilmainham. A small hanging cell was built in the prison in 1891. It is located on the first floor, between the west wing and the east wing.

There was no segregation of prisoners; men, women and children were incarcerated up to 5 in each cell, with only a single candle for light and heat. Most of their time was spent in the cold and the dark, and each candle had to last for two weeks. Its cells were roughly 28 square metres in area.

Children were sometimes arrested for petty theft, the youngest said to be a seven-year-old child, while many of the adult prisoners were transported to Australia.

At Kilmainham, the poor conditions in which women prisoners were kept provided the spur for the next stage of development. As early as his 1809 report the Inspector had observed that male prisoners were supplied with iron bedsteads while females "lay on straw on the flags in the cells and common halls". Half a century later there was little improvement. The women's section, located in the west wing, remained overcrowded. In an attempt to relieve the overcrowding, 30 female cells were added to the Gaol in 1840. These improvements had not been made long before the Great Famine occurred, and Kilmainham was overwhelmed with the increase of prisoners.

Porter can carry extreme loads. Local trekking agencies have to respect a limit of 25 kilograms. Sometimes 35 kilograms are seen for tourist load carrying but the most extremes loads are carried by porters who are not working for trekking agencies. There is no limit and we can asses some load to approach 100 kg.

Annapurna is famous for having been the first 8000m summit to be climbed by human (Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, in heroic and crazy conditions). Today this area attracts the most trekkers since the lanscape is the most impressive of Nepal. This comes from the fact that the difference of heigh beetween the different summits and the ground basis very high. Based on that criteria, the valley betwwen Annapurna and Dhaulagiri is the deepest in the world. The main ethnic group who live today in this area are the Gurung.

The European Space Agency’s terrestrial planet hunter Plato has recently completed a series of key tests inside the Maxwell Test Chamber at ESTEC, demonstrating that its electronic equipment is fit to work in space.

This photo captures the spacecraft standing inside the special chamber. The shielded enclosure features conducting metal walls, floor, and ceiling that form a Faraday cage, screening out all external interference. Its 9 m-high interior is lined floor to ceiling with foam spikes that absorb electrical signals and sounds to mimic the void of space.

Once the chamber was sealed closed, engineers remotely switched on and commanded Plato’s electronic equipment. They ran a series of tests to ensure that the spacecraft’s complex instruments and modules did not interfere with each other or with the communication systems, creating unwanted ‘crosstalk’.

In the extreme vacuum of space, a spacecraft’s electronics can behave differently than they do in a typical test lab on the ground. Without proper testing, this can have unforeseen consequences that could affect the mission’s goals or even damage the equipment.

Thanks to the tests run in the Maxwell Test Chamber, engineers verified that Plato’s many electronic systems can work together in space without interference – in other words, that they are electromagnetically compatible.

With compatibility checked off, Plato has now cleared the last remaining major exam in the series that the spacecraft must undertake to graduate for launch.

The exams started back in January this year with vibration and acoustic tests, followed by a month-long stay inside the Large Space Simulator where Plato aced a demanding set of tests and demonstrated that it is fit to withstand the harsh conditions of space.

Plato will lift off on an Ariane 6. Its launch is planned by Arianespace for March 2027.

[Image description: Photograph of a spacecraft towering at the centre of a large test chamber. The chamber's walls and ceiling are covered with dense rows of blue foam spikes that create a striking geometric pattern extending in all directions around the spacecraft. The right side of the spacecraft is dominated by shiny black, stowed, solar panels. The spacecraft body is partly visible on the left wrapped in reflective gold-coloured insulating foil and partially covered by a translucent protective sheet secured with small pieces of red tape.]

Solar Angel

I once dreamed that I was standing in a heavenly temple, surrounded by unearthly radiance, and divine music poured from the heavens. When I awoke, I realized I had dreamed of my destiny—to be a guiding Solar Angel. I, an ordinary mortal, dreaming of solitude and peace, must lead people to the gates of a place of eternal happiness and love through the light and warmth of the soul, peace, and inspiration.

I found a place similar to the one I saw in my dream—Memento Mori. And now it is one of my favorite places in the world of Solar Angels. I am grateful to the people who set this task before me. For the fact that, accompanied by the heavenly organ music of Ave Maria, I dedicated myself to this task and, surrounded by divine radiance, enjoyed the solitude on the other side of consciousness, detached from everything.
