“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”

If you walk down the Royal Mile and you'll see open doorways near the castle end of the street. In Edinburgh terms, these are known as "closes"; basically, very old, narrow, steep streets once replete with open sewers. Now home to bars, restaurants, and museums, they offer a true taste of historic Edinburgh. Advocate's Close is a particularly interesting one; positioned up high, it affords views of the Scott Monument and a good portion of Edinburgh. Halfway down, The Devil's Advocate is a moodily lit bar that serves up excellent cocktails in a historic setting.

Like most of the closes, Advocate's Close, which is thought to date back to the 1500s, is spooky and fascinating, and it's like stepping back in time. Most of these skinny streets have been widened or built over; the closes that remain are a precious fragment of local history. There are many more closes...as World's End Close, Fleshmarket Close etc

"As I was going to St. Ives I met a man with seven wives,

Each wife had seven sacks, each sack had seven cats,

Each cat had seven kits: kits, cats, sacks and wives,

How many were going to St. Ives?"

"St Ives, also known as Saint Ivo of Kermartin and the 'Advocate of the Poor', is the patron saint of lawyers and abandoned children."

St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, in the small town of DeVall's Bluff, Arkansas. The church was built in 1912, but closed in 1986 when the last parishioner passed away. It was then abandoned and left to the elements.

Advocate Close, Edinburgh

The backside of the building of "The Advocate," a local weekly newspaper in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.

This steep and narrow close, believed to date from 1544, is known as Advocate's Close. In the 16th century, the street was a fashionable address, where the Scottish gentry and professionals would live with their family and servants. It takes its name from Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, the last Advocate of Scotland in office during the time of the Restoration, Revolution and Union.

By the 19th century, the Edinburgh gentry had abandoned the Old Town and moved to the New Town or suburbs. Streets such as Advocate's Close passed to the lower classes and were split into tenements. In this form, given the high density and dark, narrow streets, the area became a slum. Most of the buildings on the west side of the close were removed in the 1920s as part of a slum clearance programme, and it was these demolitions which created a new view of the Scott Monument, standing slightly off-axis to the north, as seen here.

The close is generally always awash with tourists taking 100s of selfies with little respect for anyone else there who also wishes to appreciate the view north - so, despite the circumstances behind the lack of visible tourists and people in general, it was nice to see it empty for once.

Advocate Close, Edinburgh

I guess for all this time I knew

I was in control

I was losing touch

And now I guess the only thing to do

Is to sell my soul and it won't sell for much

I can't believe for all this time I knew

I was in control

I was losing touch

And yeah, I guess the only thing to do

Is to sell my soul

And watch it go like
