“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”
― Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
An eastward view of the north and south sides of Governor Oglesby St. in downtown Elkhart, a small village (population 450 at the 2020 census) in Logan County that is located 20 miles northwest of Springfield, the state capital. These old commercial buildings date to the late 19th and early 20th century.
Richard Oglesby (1824-1899) lived in Elkhart and served as governor of Illinois from 1865 to 1869, 1873, and 1885 to 1889 making him the first man in Illinois history to serve three times as governor. He also represented Illinois in the United States Senator from 1873 until 1879.
During his tenure as governor, the Republican advocated improving the quality of care of the mentally ill and for other groups of disabled citizens. He also signed legislation expanding the State Hospital system from one campus to three. After his retirement, Oglesby spent his remaining years in retirement and died in 1899 at his "Oglehurst" estate in Elkhart. Governor Oglesby is buried in Elkhart Cemetery.

If you walk down the Royal Mile and you'll see open doorways near the castle end of the street. In Edinburgh terms, these are known as "closes"; basically, very old, narrow, steep streets once replete with open sewers. Now home to bars, restaurants, and museums, they offer a true taste of historic Edinburgh. Advocate's Close is a particularly interesting one; positioned up high, it affords views of the Scott Monument and a good portion of Edinburgh. Halfway down, The Devil's Advocate is a moodily lit bar that serves up excellent cocktails in a historic setting.
Like most of the closes, Advocate's Close, which is thought to date back to the 1500s, is spooky and fascinating, and it's like stepping back in time. Most of these skinny streets have been widened or built over; the closes that remain are a precious fragment of local history. There are many more closes...as World's End Close, Fleshmarket Close etc

Named in honour of Jack Layton, this ferry terminal commemorates a passionate advocate for social justice and beloved Canadian political leader. Jack Layton served as leader of the federal New Democratic Party from 2003 until his passing in 2011, and was known for his tireless work on housing, environmental sustainability, and equality. A longtime Toronto city councillor, Layton helped shape the city’s progressive spirit. His legacy lives on in the heart of Toronto, where this terminal connects people to the Toronto Islands—one of his favourite places. His wife, Olivia Chow, a fellow champion of social causes, is now the Mayor of Toronto, elected in 2023.

Closes are narrow alleyways that connect streets. Pronounced with an oo sound like in good or food. I found these little closes charming, interesting and a respite from the hordes of tourists filling the main thoroughfares.
One of the most approachable bluebirds I've ever encountered, found in a city park actively hunting insects from this perch. Repeatedly dropping to the ground and back again, this routine was repeated for at least fifteen minutes before it finally flew away. Was able to approach within 15 ft or so.

Jacobitism was a political ideology advocating the restoration of the Catholic House of Stuart to the British throne. When James II of England chose exile after the November 1688 Glorious Revolution, the Parliament of England ruled he had "abandoned" the English throne, which was given to his Protestant daughter Mary II of England, and her husband William III. On the same basis, in April the Scottish Convention awarded Mary and William the throne of Scotland.
The Revolution created the principle of a contract between monarch and people, which if violated meant the monarch could be removed. A key tenet of Jacobitism was that kings were appointed by God, making the post-1688 regime illegitimate. However, it also functioned as an outlet for popular discontent and thus was a complex mix of ideas, many opposed by the Stuarts themselves. Conflict between Prince Charles and Scottish Jacobites over the Acts of Union 1707 and divine right seriously undermined the 1745 rising.
Jacobitism was strongest in Ireland, the Western Scottish Highlands, Perthshire, and Aberdeenshire. Pockets of support were also present in Wales, Northern England, the West Midlands and South West England, all areas strongly Royalist during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. In addition, the Stuarts received intermittent backing from countries like France, usually dependent on their own strategic objectives.
Living in this part of the Highlands, with Loch Shiel and Moidart on my doorstep, I occasionally meet individuals who will proclaim themselves, Jacobites. when they say this don't really know how to respond, apart from to feel a sort of sadness, for a revolution that failed. I mean, if Bonnie Prince Charlie had succeeded in his quest do you think we would still have got Starmer and Reeves and their incompetent government, or would we have gone the way of the French and put them to the guillotine?
Here the Jacobite steam train (aka Harry Potter Hogwarts Express) crosses the Caledonian canal, next stop Glenfinnan viaduct
I guess for all this time I knew
I was in control
I was losing touch
And now I guess the only thing to do
Is to sell my soul and it won't sell for much
I can't believe for all this time I knew
I was in control
I was losing touch
And yeah, I guess the only thing to do
Is to sell my soul
And watch it go like

French explorer Samuel de Champlain named Cape D’Or (Cape of Gold) in 1607. Originally established as a fog horn station in 1875, the light station is perched halfway up the dramatic cliffs rising out of the turbulent Minas Channel. The cape received its first lighthouse in 1922.
The present lighthouse, is a one-story fog signal building (fog horn had been removed when I was there in 2022, it use to be on the red pad) with a light tower rising from one corner, it was built in 1965. After automation in 1989, the two keeper’s dwellings, completed in 1959, sat vacant until being leased by the Advocate District Development Association in 1995 and converted into a tearoom and hostel.
This is the only lighthouse in Nova Scotia to offer overnight accommodations.
