There is something magnetic and highly addictive about paramo. High up at over 4000m, I feel home in an incomprehensible way, since I am slow at that altitude and not so much in control, but my body somehow senses an impossible ecological feat as if is the perfect combination of my beloved South African fynbos, the alpine grasslands of my youth in the Carpathian Mountains and the undulating feathergrass of the Kazakh steppes .... with the anticipation of new treasures to be discovered.... like this Rainbow-bearded Thornbill (Chalcostigma herrani) - a stunning hummingbird, which took three trips to Papallacta pass until revealing itself in the rain - flashing for a milisecond that rainbow of a beard and giving me memories to last a lifetime. Thank you, Nelson for trying very hard in that cold and Thank you paramo!
