Actors need to know their place!

(November 2004, Pismo Beach, CA)

William Windom’s portrayal of Commodore Matt Decker in *The Doomsday Machine* from *Star Trek: The Original Series* is truly legendary. Windom captured the sheer desperation, guilt, and psychological torment of a man facing an unfathomable crisis, delivering a performance so intense and raw that it elevated the entire episode into one of the most gripping stories of the series. His ability to convey both the authority of a Starfleet officer and the anguish of someone who had lost everything was nothing short of extraordinary. Watching his eyes, his mannerisms, and the way his voice cracked under the weight of his emotions made Decker feel real, flawed, and deeply human. It’s astonishing that he didn’t receive an Emmy for his work, as his performance remains one of the finest ever seen in *Star Trek*. While the main cast members across the franchise have delivered countless brilliant moments, there’s something uniquely powerful about a guest star stepping in for a single episode and leaving such an indelible mark. Windom’s Decker stands alongside the greatest performances in *Star Trek* history, a testament to the show’s ability to attract truly gifted actors who could bring a wealth of depth to even one-time roles.
