MALESTROIT
Located in the loop of a meander of the Oust, Malestroit was born in the 11th century, in the shadow of a feudal mound, then of a fortified castle, built on an island in one of the two arms of the river. controlling a passageway. The Saint-Gilles church was erected in the 12th century before being remodeled (15th and 16th centuries).
In the 15th century, the city became one of the nine baronies of Brittany, and was surrounded by fortifications of which some vestiges remain. From the rich past of the Crusades and the flourishing trade made possible by the river, the Place du Bouffay has preserved majestic bourgeois residences in sculpted granite and half-timbered houses. They display unique figurines: the spinning sow, the hare playing the biniou, the pelican, evoke the fabliaux of the Middle Ages.
In the 16th century, the construction of two airlock locks, among the first in France, linked Malestroit to Redon; commercial activity takes off and develops the city. Four suburbs surround the historic city center and the ruins of its ramparts.
