There is no irony or other cleverness among curators by starting the timeline with a stick in a display box. Surely in the long history of play and experimentation 'found objects' like sticks are important to acknowledge. What is curious, though, is the normal orientation of timelines to follow the reading and writing pattern that begins from left to right. On these walls the years follow toward the right and end up with the ancient stick. In other words the museum goer most likely begins today in 2019 to the left of this photo and proceeds *back* in time to arrive at the stick as the last item along the timeline.
The effect of guiding the visitor back in time is one of revelation: goer deeper and deeper into the past. The other way to organize the timeline would begin from the earliest point (the stick) and proceed along the wall to the righ until arriving at today. That is the way most history books go: from oldest to newest events. So to sequene the timeline the way it is here fits a "time traveler" approach rather than a history book.
