The special exhibit about toys from many generations was vast, filling several smaller rooms, in addition to this main hall. On this annual Free Museum Day there were many families, particularly the ones with small children. At least one retired couple drove a few hours from the east side of the state to the museum, here in Grand Rapids, on the west side of the state. While much of the groupings of artifacts were walled in clear plastic barriers, in the middle of this room there were hands-on play areas, too. Interestingly in the foreground, the bed is carefully arranged to appear true to life: a child's hasty effort to "make your bed," as parents may have ruled. And on the floor are a few amusements in the midst of play, seemingly frozen in time.

This Finn Whale last breathed around 1900. The bones then were owned by a private collector in Michigan, far from salt water, for many decades until coming at last to the Grand Rapids Public Museum for prominent display. The other large display is suspended in the air behind the big mammal. It is an airplane and seems right at home as it hangs in mid-air. The defleshed remains of the whale do not seem to fit so naturally, although in this public open space they can be seen to good advantage from the ground or from the rising staircase at the right.

This drive-by photo shows the public-facing landscaping at the front entrance to Amway's offices to the east of Grand Rapids in Ada, Michigan. Scores of national flags on each side of the hollow stainless steel globe seems to suggest the extent of the company's product distributors around the planet; or, if not the exact representation of business dealings, then more figuratively as a statement of aspiration to express the many places where the company could or would like to be selling. Early snow at the start of November caught many trees with their colorful leaves not yet dropped to the ground. Thanks to bequests this trail system and the educational/interpretive center are open to the public, to school groups, and to the campus community as a natural extension to the liberal arts and Christian-guided curriculum.

Compared to the years when the first colonists arrived in this part of the state and there was a lot more nature than people, now the reverse is true. There are so many hard surfaces that block the rain and snow from reaching the soil. There are roads and parking lots, buildings of all sorts, and cultivated land most everywhere else. Natural areas are confined to pockets here and there, in parks owned by city, county, state or sometimes nationally. So it is laudable that this space has been dedicated to creatures other than humans, eventhough people occupy the trails and buildings established there.
