Polygonum Bistorta Also known as snake root, dog stinkers, adderwort, easter giant, easter mangiant, Oderwort, Osterick, Patience Dock, Red Legs, Renouée Bistorte, Snakeweed, Sweet Dock. and Dragonwort. Spikes of pink flowers. Found naturally in damp meadows, ditches. 'Bistorta' means twice-twisted - the shape of the roots. About forty species of Polygonum are recorded as having been medicinally employed. A number of species yield blue or yellow dyestuffs.
Small Copper and Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary butterflies like this plant.
Was used for treating snake bites. Plant contains tannins so has been used in leather-making. Also known as easter Ledges as it was used in various puddings at Easter time. Powdered leaves were given to children to get rid of worms.
Bistort contains many compounds, but in particular high amounts of tannins. The tannins give this herb powerful astringent and anti-inflammatory actions. It is also said to be anti-catarrhal, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-haemorrhagic and a demulcent herb.
Has been used in catarrh, diarrhoea - especially for children, diverticulosis, incontinence, irritable bowel syndrome, nasal polyps, nose bleeds - and other situations where bleeding needs to be slowed, sore mouth and inflamed tongue (as a mouthwash), uterine infections with discharge (vaginal douche). Second to none to soothe sore throats. While most antibiotics kill germs good and bad, this herb removes all local discomfort and lets the body fight its own battle. It is often claimed that bistort will heal internal ulcers. Since new research has discovered internal ulcers are caused by an organism, perhaps there is something to the claim. There are no well known side effects, drug interactions or contra-indications from eating Bistort.
Some research has been done into Bistorts antibacterial properties www.academicjournals.org/ajpp/PDF/pdf2011/July/Khalid%20e...
In the early 1970s "The Times" newspaper promoted a world championship traditional Bistort leaf pudding-making competition. Well, it was quite a success at the time, particularly in the North of England. The Herb Pudding is still eaten in Cumberland and Westmorland, where Bistort is common and is a very wholesome dish and very suitable in May, when ordinary green vegetables used to be scarce.

Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, he was the main speaker at the launch event for Consilience: the Journal of Sustainable Development. The unique, student-run publication is one of the first in the world of its kind, attempting to bring an interdisciplinary perspective on issues like poverty and environment.
Students celebrate the inauguration of the ninth edition of the award-wining undergraduate research journal, Eukaryon.
Here applauding a speech by Dr. Joshua Zivin, the journal adviser and head of the Columbia PhD program in Sustainable Development.
Ah, always read the abstract of a journal article first. Then flip through and see if there's anything worth reading.
Then stick it in your bibliography and it looks like you've read loads...

pH Color Scale Prop
I don't think this scale is quite accurate for cyanidin, the pigment in red cabbage. However, I did not want to dredge up sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide to make my own, so I took it at face value as a reasonably close (and safer) alternative.
I got the hues from this journal article. The abstract printed there is a weird typo and totally out of place; the Thai researchers are making inexpensive anthocyanin solutions and paper so farmers can test waste water on their farms. I took the hues from Figure 11.
After printing out, I budget-laminated with overlapping packing tape, then sliced into strips (paper cutter again comes in handy). The children can then compare the color they get with the samples to these strips to estimate actual pH values.
Hundreds of these flowers popping out of the ground was a truly beautiful sight.
In west Africa the savanna burnt each year. In the parc this was done on purpose, to keep the fields open and to produce enough the forage (i.e. fresh grass shoots) for the mammal grazers. In this case the fires had come and gone just a few weeks previous (southwards towards the coast, where the rainy season lasts until longer in the year, the burning period started later, and we drove through a horrible smoke-shrouded smoldering landscape much of the time). In the picture you can still see some ash and cinders. This plant grows much like a bulb in a sense (I think the technical term is a lithotuber? It has a large corky trunk-like thing just under the surface of the soil), during the growing season this plant sends out long leafy twigs, which die off late in the dry season, and later burn. Just after the rains come the flowers pop out of the baked soil.
This plant is used in many traditional medicines in Burkina Faso and Mali, usually against malaria. Studies into this began in the late 1980's and continue to this day, this is a recently published study from Nigeria: www.academicjournals.org/AJBR/abstracts/abstracts/abstrac... et al.htm
I thought the plant also yields a dye, but can't find any sources to reference that, maybe it's in Plants of West Africa (which I once borrowed, but don't own)...
The final design of the Political Science Student Journal when I was the Editor of the Journal. The purpose of the academic journal was to showcase students' best work.
