Emory Human Health in Paris, Summer 2015
Paris, France
An assignment for my French Perspectives on Health and Well-Being class, was to go on a weekly hour long walking tour of the city and then write an essay on any interesting thing on the topic of health. For one of my walking tours, I ventured to this park. We talked about in class one reason the French seem to be healthier than we are in America, is because they seemed to be less stressed and take time out of their day to make sure this doesn’t consume them. While walking through the park, the grass areas were filled with people on a weekday evening just sitting there and enjoying each other’s company.

While taking this picture I was so frustrated with the bus, knowing if it would move, I could capture the most beautiful and romantic picture. But the bus didn't move and this lead to some interesting intellectual questions and romance, reality, and tourism. Sometimes reality gets in the way of romance. Sometimes tourism gets in the way of tourism. Life isn't perfect and we have to learn to balance the sweet and the sour in life because that's reality.

As part of our History of Mental Health in Paris, we took an excursion to the world famous Louvre Museum to see how mental illness and how health were depicted in French art. We talked about in class how in the 1800s the definition of mental illness really was just anyone that was consigned to the margins of society, so even gamblers and criminals were considered to be “mad.” As I was going throughout the vast collections in the museum, I couldn’t help but notice all the different art pieces that displayed this broad definition of mental illness through various mediums of art and collections.

I went to Giverny to see Monet’s water lilies after surveying Monet’s paintings in Paris. I had the odd experience of simultaneously developing greater respect for Monet but reflecting on the fact that perhaps no piece of artwork can truly capture the beauty of the garden. Nonetheless, it was amazing to be able to see the source of inspiration for his masterpieces.
