Abu Simbel is a historic site comprising two massive rock cut temples in the village of Abu Simbel أبو سمبل, Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt, near the border with Sudan. It is situated on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km (140 mi) southwest of Aswan (about 300 km (190 mi) by road). The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the 19th Dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. They serve as a lasting monument to the king Ramesses II. His wife Nefatari and children can be seen in smaller figures by his feet, considered to be of lesser importance and were not given the same position of scale. This commemorates his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Their huge external rock relief figures have become iconic.

Abu Serga, also known as Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church, is one of the oldest Coptic churches in Egypt, dating back to the 4th century. Located in the middle of the ancient Roman fortress of Babylon in Old Cairo.
It was built over a cave where Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus have taken shelter after fleeing to Egypt to escape persecution from King Herod of Judea.
The church has unique architectural and artistic elements that reflect the spirit of Coptic architecture in Egypt.
Based on a basilica structure with a nave and two side aisles. The nave is defined by 12 columns, 11 in white marble and one in red granite, with some showing traces of images of saints.
The roof is one of the most interesting features constructed in the shape of Noah’s ark.
The church houses some great icons representing the life of Christ, various saints and the Virgin Mary. The cave of the Holy Family, now a crypt, is reached by descending steps in a chapel to the left of the altar.
Both Abu Serga and El Muallaqa are Coptic Cairo’s top tourist attraction. The places where the Holy Family stayed in have been transformed into churches and monasteries. Almost twenty-two places in Egypt. The historical journey of the Holy Family lasted for more than three years and a half, a great blessing for its land and its people.
