Dramatic differences between dark and light embellish this Cassini
spacecraft image of Saturn, its rings and its moons Dione and Enceladus.
Saturn's northern and southern latitudes appear dark in this image because
of the camera filter used. This view uses a spectral filter sensitive to
absorption of certain wavelengths of light by methane in Saturn's
atmosphere. The cloud tops in the northern and southern latitudes are at a
slightly greater depth than in the equatorial region, and are underneath a
layer of methane. This means that light travels along a longer path
compared to the equatorial region as it enters the atmosphere, reflects
off the cloud tops, and returns through the upper atmosphere to enter the
camera. The light at near-infrared wavelengths thus passes through more
light-absorbing methane at the northern and southern latitudes than at the
equator, and so these latitudes are darker.
Dione (1,123 kilometers, or 698 miles across) can be seen on the left of
the image. Enceladus (504 kilometers, or 313 miles across) is visible on
the right.
This view looks toward the northern, sunlit side of the rings from just
above the ringplane.
The image was taken with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on Oct.
21, 2009 using a spectral filter sensitive to wavelengths of near-infrared
light centered at 890 nanometers. The view was obtained at a distance of
approximately 2.5 million kilometers (1.6 million miles) from Saturn and
at a Sun-Saturn-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 104 degrees. Image scale is
143 kilometers (89 miles) per pixel.

Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages
the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The
Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and
assembled at JPL. The imaging operations center is based at the Space
Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Saturn's rings create a brilliant halo around the turbulent giant planet.
Here, the Cassini spacecraft looks into Saturn's clouds using a spectral
filter sensitive to absorption by methane. Light that reaches down to
depths where methane is prevalent gets absorbed. Regions of the planet
devoid of the clouds and hazes that can reflect this light back to the
camera appear relatively dark. Thus, the bright areas in these images
represent hazes and clouds high in the atmosphere.
Because the range of wavelengths for this filter is narrow, and because
most of this light is absorbed by Saturn, the planet's disk is inherently
faint and the exposures required are rather long. The rings do not
strongly absorb at these wavelengths, and so they reflect more light and
are overexposed compared to the atmosphere.
This view looks toward the sunlit side of the rings from about 6 degrees
below the ringplane. Janus (181 kilometers, or 113 miles across) is seen
above the rings at right.
The image was taken with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on Sept.
25, 2007 using a spectral filter sensitive to wavelengths of infrared
light centered at 890 nanometers. The view was obtained at a distance of
approximately 2.3 million kilometers (1.4 million miles) from Saturn and
at a Sun-Saturn-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 67 degrees. Image scale is
132 kilometers (82 miles) per pixel.

OK, this one is a little silly and is edging rather close to altered books (don't want to go there). I got a free desk calendar in the mail. I thought about putting it into the recycling bin (I prefer electronic calendars), but then I started carving it with sharp knives. It's not art. It's an experiment. The borders of the pages are carved into different levels but it is difficult to convey the 3D effect in a photo.
Finished Dec. 9, 2008.

Dear Dairy
Today I read that Bovine Milk might reduce the absorption of antioxidants from Blueberries when consumed at the same time as the Blueberries. I also read that Bovine milk might NOT prevent the absorption of antioxidants from Black tea when consumed with the Black tea.
So there's that.
And Dear Dairy, during one recent very frivolous moment of weakness I actually purchased a new book (pictured above) to replace Bill McKibben's "Hope, Human and Wild" which I finally finished reading 15 years after it was given to me as birthday gift.........15 years ago:-) ( Bill 350.org ) twitter.com/billmckibben
M.A.C. Farrant continues to buoy us up with her new book, "The World Afloat".
A Thin book of non-rhyming, "miniatures". Each one about a page or two long. It seems perfect for the Reading Room - each tiny tale a very moving experience..........
Maybe I should start writing book reviews........:-)
