Mark Rothko used muted yet vivacious hues blended upon black in his AB-EX paintings.
His influence upon Saul Leiter is obvious. Especially in those photos with pronounced zone fields.
In my quest I am influenced by Leiter's abstract foundation. Blended colors and zones - not too far, leaving a detail for the viewer to latch onto and connect with the image.
Influenced by the bold authoritative AB-EX work of Franz Klein I moved in closer and closer.
Freelander used this style to create his 'from inside a car' photos to break up the visual field into distinct zones.

This aircraft was originally delivered to Qantas as VH-OGB in 1988.
A painting I did in 1978 while still in college. I was sharing a studio with a friend who gave me a canvas-covered square of Masonite, about 40" X 40". I covered over his painting with this. It's been in my mom's storage for at least 30 years.

I already shared two mediocre shots of the header end of eastbound train M436 crossing the Quaboag River here at about MP 75.5 on CSXT's Boston Subdivision. Luckily I had my camera still at hand when this popped out of the trees. I'm not a big freight car shooter (since I'm not a modeler) but I love the fallen flag road names, and none more so than my beloved Denver and Rio Grande Western. So it was a treat so see this tattered and battered car still in Grande orange and black and still with her original DRGW reporting marks.
DRGW 50835 is an AAR Class RBL Type 610 insulated boxcar. This 61 ft 80 ton car was part of a 100 unit order (Lot 2870) built by Pacific Car and Foundry for the Rio Grande in May 1979 and probably hauled more than a few loads of Coors beer east from Golden in her prime. If I were to hazard a guess this car is loaded with California wine and headed to ABEX located in the Boston Business Park adjacent to Readville yard. They are a warehousing and distribution company specializing in alcoholic beverages, and CSX delivers many carloads of beer, wine, and spirits destined to thirsty individuals throughout the greater Boston area. This is the business that used to be handled out of the Foxboro Terminals on the south end of the Framingham Secondary and insulated boxcars like this are commonly spotted, including another car in this same number series I photographed in the yard there one morning.
I don’t shoot a lot of freight car photos. But these old road names are aging out fast. I should shoot more…

A plastic pouch to hold pens and pencils. I used this in the 1980's while working for ABEX - a manufacturing firm in Oxnard, CA. It saved many a shirt from ink stains.
