my first stop on my drive north (to portland, for a conference) was weott -- or rather, where weott used to be, which was right next to the south fork of the eel river -- but then the floods of 1964 washed away the town completely, & they rebuilt higher up the bank.
the big pole in this photo (not the telephone pole, right of it & closer -- and taller) shows the depth of the flood waters in '64 -- all the way up at the top! and it's sitting on the roadside which is already about ten feet higher than normal river level. can't imagine how terrifying that water must have been.
Much love to the brother, raiding his archives and giving me a bag full on vintage goodies...more stuff we though lost and some great UK graff nuggets.
Long before the gasworks was as safe as a Prostitutes condom, on this day we were sure we'd get pulled for this blatant act of vandalism.......I was just worried I wouldn't be able to get my old mans ladder back before he missed it.

Someone's coming.
Is it bad guys?
Yes. I'm afraid so.

Zombie hunters in spectacular trouble. When playing ATZ, trust in guile. Firepower will get you out of trouble first and into loads of trouble later!
One of my more succesfull participation games at Amersfoort at december 11th. I played three games, could not accomodate all who wanted to play so promised to come again the next time and great fun was had by all until my voice and feet gave out :o)
A 5-week contract with Translift at Shannon in Jan-Feb 1992 gave me plenty of photo opportunities.
Flash Airlines DC-8-55F 5N-ATZ (c/n 45965) at Shannon Repair Services for maintenance.
In 1993 it was acquired by MK Cargo Airlines (Mike Kruger) and became 9G-MKD. In December 1996 it was written off at Port Harcourt, Nigeria, after hitting trees on the approach and crashing onto the runway. All four crew members were OK.

Douglas DC-8-55F 5N-ATZ (c/n 45965) of Flash Airlines, Nigeria. It started out in 1968 with Iberia, and was re-registered to MK Airlines as 9G-MKD in October 1995.
On 17 December 1996 it struck trees about half a mile from the runway on approach to Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The crew attempted to go around but the aircraft did not respond, touched down short of the runway, struck some approach lights, ran onto the runway and then veered to the left. There were no injuries to the crew, but the aircraft was damaged beyond repair.

Manston, UK - 10 July 1988
RAF Manston Air Day 1988
Although Manston was by no means a busy airport in the 1980s it did have reasonably regular cargo flights, mostly to exotic destinations in Africa by obscure African airlines. Flash Airlines was one of these, with 5N-ATZ seen here departing after the airshow for its flight back to Nigeria.
Fairchild 71C registration number CF-ATZ was built by Canadian Fairchild of Montreal and purchased by Canadian Airways, a precursor to Canadian Airlines International, Feb 25, 1933. It operated out of Winnipeg and later from Edmonton and throughout the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Territorial Air Service purchased and operated her from 1941 until she crashed at Lake Aristofats, 110 miles east of Yellowknife, on Sept 24, 1949. Two people perished in the crash and two survived the crash. Max Ward and Matt Berry salvaged the aircraft the next day. There she lay next to the lake until 1981 when the Alberta Aviation Museum Association with significant help from Buffalo Airways and 435 Squadron of CFB Namao returned her to Edmonton for restoration. With 11,000 hours of restoration work later the Museum is please to be able to present this noteworthy aircraft from Alberta's aviation history . The list of pilots who flew it include Punch Dickens, Wop May, Matt Berry and Lewis Leigh. In 1935 Matt Berry flew it 8400 miles (16000 kilometres) through the Northwest Territories to locate possible air routes to Alaska and beyond.
