ANZ Gothic Bank, Melbourne - This bank comprises several amalgamated buildings on the north-east corner of Collins and Queen streets, most notably the Gothic Bank built in 1883-87 for the English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank (ES&A). It was designed by William Wardell and commissioned by ES&A general manager Sir George Verdon.
An unusual combination of taste, money and talent produced this masterpiece of Marvellous Melbourne, but Verdon's vision of a building 'worthy of the city' was essentially Wardell's creation. The Pyrmont sandstone façade shows English, French and especially Venetian Gothic influences. Richly decorated cast-iron columns in the banking chamber support a bold, breathtaking ceiling, where the bolt heads and spandrel openings are coated in pure gold leaf and each group of four columns effectively frames a painted panel portraying the arms of the bank or one of its major places of operation. The upper floors, once Verdon's residence, were also lavishly ornamented.
The building's history proves the possibilities of heritage conservation coexisting with progress. In the 1920s ES&A extended the banking chamber eastwards into the adjoining Stock Exchange and Safe Deposit Building. This L-shaped structure (built 1889-91 and designed by William Pitt) had frontages to Collins and Queen streets. Its magnificent public hall, now known as the Cathedral Room, was incorporated into the banking chamber in 1950. ES&A's successor, Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd, undertook restoration and redevelopment of the site in 1990-93, when a modern office tower was built at the rear (near Little Collins Street) and connected to the other buildings by a glass-roofed atrium.

The ANZ building was designed by HASSELL, which, given the serenity in this picture, is an interesting play on words. The Webb Bridge is intended to represent a Koori eel trap. The light however was provided by nature. The Webb Bridge has that name because it has been built out of the old railway bridge to Webb dock. Despite the power of the internet why Webb dock was called Webb dock has remained elusive, at least to me.

Here's the former Stadium Australia, its opening name at the time of the 2000 Olympic Games, completed in 1999 at a cost of $690 million. The original configuration had extended uncovered stands at the ends to accommodate 110,000 people, still the most for an Olympic venue this century (the MCG in Melbourne 1956 had space for more). Those stands were reconstructed and capacity is now 80,000. Plans for a knock-down and rebuild have been shelved due to a lack of community support - hardly surprising when it's just 20 years old and still offers facilities comparable to the best in the world. Of course, there's always a risk it could fall behind, and money was on the table before the pandemic struck but it's not as if there'd be enough difference in crowd atmosphere or hospitality at the big events to justify the cost. The main issue is that bread and butter events draw small crowds and while I haven't seen the NRL's proposal for the NSW government to fund smaller suburban stadiums for say, 10,000-20,000 people instead that sounds much more appropriate for the weekly competitions.
Apart from the Olympics, the stadium hosts Sydney's largest events including the 2003 Rugby World Cup, NRL State of Origin and concerts like Adele's. It probably needs ten big crowds a year to make it work economically.
The stadium was sponsored by Telstra through the '90's but ANZ later assumed the venue's debt and vanity signage.
