In the Andes, the greatest number of glaciers is found along the border between Chile and Argentina (approximately 4,000). A smaller number are found in the Tropical Andes, which constitute more than 95 per cent of the world’s tropical glaciers (Vuille et al., 2008). The largest number of tropical glaciers is located in the Peruvian Andes, with the Quelccaya Ice Cap located in the Cordillera Vilcanota being the largest single ice body in Peru (Hastenrath, 1998).

Our route from São Paulo was via Santiago (Chile), so we were able to admire the Andes from the air 4 times in all (twice going and twice on the way back). A fantastic experience, this must be the most impressive mountain range I've ever seen.

The Andes is the longest continental mountain range in the world. It is a continual range of highlands along the western coast of South America. This range is about 7,000 km (4,300 mi) long, about 200 km (120 mi) to 700 km (430 mi) wide (widest between 18° south and 20° south latitude), and of an average height of about 4,000 m (13,000 ft). The Andes extend from north to south through seven South American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
Along its length, the Andes is split into several ranges, which are separated by intermediate depressions. The Andes is the location of several high plateaux – some of which host major cities such as Quito, Bogotá, Arequipa, Medellín, Sucre, and La Paz. The Altiplano plateau is the world's second-highest plateau following the Tibetan plateau.
The Andes range is the world's highest mountain range outside of Asia. The highest peak, Mount Aconcagua, rises to an elevation of about 6,962 m (22,841 ft) above sea level. The peak of Chimborazo in the Ecuadorean Andes is farther from Earth's center than any other location on Earth's surface, due to the equatorial bulge resulting from Earth's rotation. The world's highest volcanoes are in the Andes, including Ojos del Salado on the Chile-Argentina border which rises to 6,893 m (22,615 ft). Over fifty other Andean volcanoes also rise above 6,000 m (19,685 ft).
Here is a picture of a railroad in the Andes Mountains, circ 1900. This picture is a digital image of a glass slide I found at an antique store. This old railroad System located in Equador, was built from 1872 to 1908 was called "a top railway of the world" and even until now is considered a masterpiece of railway engineering. The highlight of the egineering and design of the rail line was the Devil's Nose, a high, almost perpendicular wall where a zigzag was carved out of the rock, which allows the train advancing and backing until reaching necessary height. The rail line took a nine day trip, if there was no snow blocking the foot paths, into a two day ride that could be accomplished snow or no snow.

La calota glaciar Quelccaya del Perú, situada a 13,5º de latitud sur, es la mayor calota glaciar tropical del mundo. Su retroceso ha sido rápido; estas imágenes captadas por el Thematic Mapper del satélite Landsat 5 muestran la diferencia de extensión durante un período de 22 años, de 1988 a 2010.

We got a ride from the hostel up a terrifying hairpin dirt road to see this 7 meter high statue at the high pass (3,832 meters elevation) of the old road across the Andes, between Mendoza, Argentina and Santiago, Chile. It was erected in 1904 to celebrate the peaceful settlement of an ongoing border dispute between the two countries. It's actually made out of metal that came from cannons and arms from both country, they were melted together to create this statue as a symbol of peace between the two countries. (however, despite this gesture there still exists some rivalry and mala onda between the two countries)
