Context for the whatizit picture earlier. This is what is called an ‘altered book’ or a book safe. It’s created by gluing together the pages of a book, then carving them. The most common are just carved out rectangles. People could put treasures inside to keep them safe and place the book on a shelf in plain sight.

The Alter Lily is very thinly scattered throughout the country, but it is most common in the Southwest and the far Southeast.
It is from the family Araceae
Although seen in gardens it is classed as a seasonal wildflower growing from May to September and this one was on some wasteland.
