Long time no flickring. Trying out my new lens, the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 with AF-S, bought yesterday. From what I've seen so far it's a really nice lens. The AF is fast and solid and f/1.4 is a dream. Unfortunately I bought a cheap UV filter as protection, which turned out to give massive flares. Going to return the filter next week .

And all the best on Your Epic Hero's Odyssey into Fine Art Photography! :)
View your artistic mission into photography as an epic odyssey of heroic poetry! Take it from Homer in Homer's Odyssey: "Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could not save his men, for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating the cattle of the Sun-god Hyperion; so the god prevented them from ever reaching home. Tell me, too, about all these things, O daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source you may know them. " --Samuel Butler Translation of Homer's Odyssey

I was stucked under the bridge with a friend due to heavy rain. Past 30 minutes, I was like "Let's not waste this photo outing, and do something productive instead of waiting!". This was what follows.

You can see the mat cutter I have, identified by a note, and it only cuts a 30" piece of mat board. I needed something that would cut a larger mat. The Logan mat cutter, similar to the one I have, that would cut to 40" was a whopping $400+. That was too much money. So, a trip to the hardware store for some extruded aluminum and I got the problem solved, with a little machining adjustment on the extrusion, for about $17. I can now cut 48" (actually, the extrusion comes in two pieces, and joins to make a 96" long straightedge, so I could do a mat cut that long if I wanted to).
Both cutters, identified by notes, have little captive edges that run over a metal channel. I needed to duplicate that width (1.57mm) on the aluminum extrusion. Hence the elaborate table saw and fingerboard setup.
