Rolling Chassis

After the M89 entered service the People African Union began to find itself more and more of the offensive as they finally had a vehicle that could go toe to toe with the South African Leviathan. Unfortunately the South Africans knew their resources were limited and they were on the defensive and so what few resources were heavily invested into minefields, fortifications and other obstacles as a stop gap. While the PAU did have some older AEV’s they were based on much older and lightly armored vehicles making them incredibly vulnerable in frontline combat. As such early on in the M89’s development plans were put in place for a Armored Engineering vehicle to work directly with armored formations to blast holes through South African minefields and traps. As such the M92 would enter service in late 1992. It sports a short 152mm howtizer for demolition duties, a twin barrels mine clearing line charge thrower, and a dozer blade. It also saw the use of extended side skirts and a beefed up turret roof and removal of the autoloader seen in the M89. As well the crew was increased from 3 to 4.

Journeys end. Loco no. D22 is seen in the AEV station at the sawmill in Mesztegnyő having arrived back 45mins early with train 23 the 15.45 from Felsőkak which had actually started from MĆ©lyĆ©ger running early as the line was blocked with heavy snowfall between Felsőkak and MĆ©lyĆ©ger. This 760mm gauge railway was operated by the State Forestry Railway AEV (Ɓllami Erdei Vasutak) up until 1991 and like many then passed to private ownership or to local cooperatives. This one was taken over by the SEFG (Somogyi Erdő-Ć©s Fafeldolgozó GazdasĆ”g Rt.) a private concern. The 760mm gauge line operated from the sawmill at Mesztegnyƶ beside the MƁV mainline and ran for 8.8kms to Felsőkak through mostly dense forest. After our own 'private' train journey courtesy of the SEFG we were allowed to sit in the coach which they kindly left in the station for the two of us to use as a waiting room. With the outside temperature well below freezing it was very welcome as the wood burning stove in the carriage kept us warm seeing as we had well over an hour to wait before walking across to the MAV standard gauge station and our train north towards Lake Balaton.

Gemenci ÁEV. CD-HO8 405 has worked the 07:30 through from Pörböly to Keselyűs, Saturday 25th April 2015. It has run round, and is about to back its train into the station. The service terminates here, shortened 6km. from BÔrÔnyfok several years ago. The line beyond is unused and heavily overgrown. 405 will work a short shuttle back to Gemenc-Dunapart, a service it repeats three times, before returning with the 15.35 through to Pörböly. Two of these meet the steam service from Pörböly at Gemenc-Dunapart.

 

This lavish service is Saturdays and Sundays only, in the summer months. (There are trains through the winter.)
