1972 was the last full year of steam operation on the New South Wales Railways, with just under 100 steam locos still in service at the beginning of the year. And steam certainly went out in style.
Six of the AD60 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratts survived in service and these continued to double-head export coal trains from Newstan to Port Waratah, right up until the end of the year.
On 27 March 1972, 6029/6018 blast out of Fassifern with their loaded train, getting a good start to attack the 1 in 40 grades towards Newcastle.

'Bathurst Steam Weekend'
Australia's largest operating steam locomotive, Beyer-Garratt No. 6029 returns to Bathurst for the June long weekend operating shuttles to Wimbledon.
On one of the these shuttles, 6029 leads with 4501 on the rear sounding amazing as they climb the gradient on approach to Wimbledon.

Built by AE Goodwin, Auburn in 1962. One of 40 built of which 8 survive to this day.
6029 cruises towards Bungendore with the last shuttle of the day as 6S80.

On one of the these shuttles, 6029 leads with 4501 on the rear passing Georges Plains bound for Wimbledon.

With 4201 and 42103 now assisting at the rear, 6029 leads the charge into Binalong as 6S65 to Junee.

Having just dropped down and then back uphill into Yass Junction, 6029 puts its renowned power to use as it continues to charge towards Goulburn as 6S70.

6029 slows for the Goulburn Street level crossing at Tarago as 6S80 to Sydney.
Here the points will be changed for the loop so 6S80 could cross SP33, the midday Explorer passenger train to Canberra.

The rebel queen Boudicca (or Boadicea) is a personification of British freedom and defiance who led the Iceni people against the Roman rulers of Britain in AD60 or 61 and destroyed London, Colchester and St Albans. On her way back from a campaign in Wales, the Roman governor defeated the Iceni in the tribe’s last battle. It is thought that Boudicca killed herself on the battlefield.
6029 continues to power towards the top of the hill, before dropping down into Queanbeyan with the 2nd shuttle of the day as 8S74.

4201, 4490, 4001 and 6029 work 6L42 into East Maitland.
This was the return transfer train from Maitland to Thirlmere following the end of the 2018 Hunter Valley Steam Festival.
3642 returned solo with passengers as the "Steamfest Flyer" to Sydney.

Beyer Garratt 6029 leads the Maitland to Paterson journey on Sunday of Steamfest 2023.
4501 can seen assisting from the rear as they snake their way up through Oakhampton, north of Maitland.
DC6029 is the only preserved AD60 in operation.
In 2007 it underwent major boiler restoration, before mainline trials began in 2014.
It's now operated by THNSW, and was 1 of 4 mainline steam locomotives at Steamfest '23. 30/04/23

6029 drops down through the sweeping bend at Gemalla as 6S69 from Tarana to Bathurst.

Originally the plan was to get Parliament House in the background, however the smoke put that plan to bed.
