These former TFM AC4400CW's aren't really a pleasant sight to see, but I guess they're still worth a shot with the dwindling number of gray engines left. I miss seeing the actual gray KCS AC44's with high numberboards and four stripes on the nose. 10/1/22.
The "greens", a C30-7 and a U30C both originally built for the BN, are in charge of LS&I train 7-Yard, seen here crossing M-35 on the LS&I Ore Sub. They're entering Eagle Mills Yard with around 60 loads of taconite pellets from the Tilden Mine.
These venerable former BN GE's are still surviving on the LS&I today, though their days here in the U.P. are definitely numbered as the LS&I is seeking to replace them. With two U30C's and one C30-7 remaining, the LS&I has visitors from all over the country coming to photograph these classic GE's.
Though popular among railfans, these are not quite so popular among LS&I, as the CEFX AC4400CW's, or "blues", on long-term lease to the railroad are gernerally preferred. The "greens" are only used as needed these days, usually if traffic is busy or if a pair of "blues" are out of service.
I came up to the U.P. this past summer hoping to shoot these, but that ended up being an unsuccessful attempt as they were no boats at the dock, thus making traffic dead on the LS&I and not justifying the need to use the older GE's. I'm definitely glad I made a second attempt as these will more than likely be gone sooner than later. 10/5/21.

A pair of untouched veteran GE's(AC4400CW's) power this coal load through the rolling hills of the Geneva sub. Sanders are on and in full dynamics to keep train at track speed. These are 18 years old and pretty much kept in coal service, not too bad, but are starting to get replaced by GEVO's and ACe's.

North of the Sangre De Cristo mountain range, the D&RGW followed the Arkansas River as it's path to get out of the mountains to the plains. Here the typical three AC4400CW's of successor SP lead Utah coal loads toward the east following the rugged Arkansas River for about 150 miles or so of Colorado.

In 1994 the SP reached a deal with the WC to operate taconite trains. The WC would usually get the emptys off the BRC, they would go to Shops Yard for cleaning of cars and a Thousand Mile inspection go North and load. With a load of taconite off the Missabe and a trio's of AC4400CW's for power another load for Geneva is rolling along the Arkansas River passing through Swissvale.

Two GE AC4400CW's lead an eastbound coal train through the Utah countryside. To me, this has always just been some of the most fascinating landscape in the country. These trains were also kind of interesting as they were often made up of mostly BN or Conrail hopper cars, this one being almost solid BN cars.
Before CP's takeover of the CMQ, CMQ's two AC4400CW's (CEFX 1002 & CEFX 1006) were generally kept together. Here they lead a 66-car CMQ 1 past the siding at Bromont.

A pair of "blues" enter CTC territory on the LS&I Ore Sub at Eagle Mills JCT with LS&I train 3-Tilden, which is bringing nearly 120 empty ore jennies to be loaded at the Tilden Mine.
Once at the Tilden Mine, the train will be loaded and split in half, making for two separate runs back to Eagle Mills. This is done due to the grades here on the line.
These CEFX AC4400CW's, which are on long-term lease to the LS&I, may not be quite as exciting as the remaing Ex-BN GE's, but they do look good here in decent light while surrounded by fall color. 10/5/21.

We're briefly transported back in time about 20 years as UP Train MBZYC 18 makes its way under the MP Signal Bridge at Chap on the UP Chester Sub. as they take the switch off Main Track 2 onto the Mt. Vernon Sub.
A couple decades ago you couldn't go a half hour without seeing an SD70M or an AC4400CW at this spot, so it was nice to sit back, watch some trains, see a storm recede off to the east, have a couple adult beverages, and for a moment kind of relive our childhoods.
With these the SD70M's being fairly rapidly retired and in some cases scrapped and the AC4400CW's being rebuilt and repainted and losing some of their identity, who knows how many more times I'll get to see these engines pass under the continuously endangered Missouri Pacific CTC hardware. Every time I show up here I expect to see those GRS G-Heads laying in the ditch, and if history is any indication, one day they will.

A pair of AC4400CW's in decent shape roar through Lenexa on Main Track 1 of the BNSF Ft. Scott Sub with UP train CATTU9-07, which is utilizing trackage rights from 30th St at Kansas City, MO to Paola, KS. UP inherited these trackage rights after their merger with the Katy.
A little over a week ago, a UP train derailed on the connector from the KCT to the UP KC Metro Sub at Sheffield and took out most of the track with it. Until that connector was back in service, UP ran a little more than usual via the BNSF between KC and Paola, running both northbounds and southbounds. 7/8/23.
