The highway

Aviez vous reconnu qu’il s’agissait d’une autoroute ?

Very often the perception of what we see is influenced by our way of thinking and our values. A simple road can sometimes take us to travel elsewhere than what we thought at the start.

Between Newtonmore and Spean Bridge on the A86 in the Scottish Highlands

My first visit to this Glen. This is 7 vertical images stitched together in Lightroom to create this panorama. The road on the left goes on for some distance into the Glen but eventually it ends in a cul-de-sac. Well worth a visit despite the narrow, twisty 3 mile road to get to this observation point & free car park from the A86.

Situated adjacent to the A86 between Spean Bridge and Aviemore. Catching the late afternoon sun! B&W worked better than colour!

Looking south from A86 near Tulloch, Highlands, Scotland

One of two images I took as I was travelling between Stirling and Skye. I couldn't stop myself pulling over and putting the 70-200 on to zoom in on both scenes.

For this one I liked the layers with the snow in the background

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

Not far from Laggan on the A86 as we cycled the Scottish coast to coast route back in 2020.

Nadolig Llawen - Merry Christmas

In case I don't post another image next week, i'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and to thank you for your kind support and encouragement, I appreciate it immensely.

Leaving Moy on the A86 east of Spean Bridge the intention was to ascend 1049m Geal Charn to the south east of loch Laggan. The weather was not good but it was far better than staying indoors, or making a round of the outdoor shops in Fort William. But as we got higher the conditions deteriorated very quickly with a whiteout meaning that the visibility was literally a few yards together with laborious soft snow. The decision was made to turn back and descend, from here it was still approx. 9km back to the car, but we still had a great day.

For this one I liked the way the cloud was flowing and covering/uncovering parts of the scene. very atmospheric!

Creag Meagaidh is a mountain on the northern side of Glen Spean in Scotland. It is a complex mountain, taking the form of a flat summit plateau from which five ridges radiate, and is most famed for the cliffs surrounding the corrie of Coire Ardair on the north-eastern face. These crags are a renowned venue for winter and ice climbing, though being somewhat vegetated they are less suited to "normal" climbing.

The name Creag Meagaidh is also applied to refer to the neighbouring peaks of Stob Poite Coire Ardair and Carn Liath, which together may be termed the Creag Meagaidh range.

All three peaks in the range may be climbed from Aberarder on the A86 road by initially following the path leading up Coire Ardair, before striking north to the summit of Carn Liath. A circuit of the glen may be made by returning to Aberarder by way of Creag Meagaidh's east ridge. The most direct route to the summit of Creag Meagaidh ascends from the head of the corrie to reach a narrow gap between the crags known as The Window. The Window forms the bealach between Creag Meagaidh and Stob Poite Coire Ardair. Creag Meagaidh may also be climbed from Moy to the southeast.

Creag Meagaidh is designated as both a Special Protection Area and a National Nature Reserve, and the number of grazing animals is controlled. This has led to a regrowth of the native woodland of birch, alder, willow, rowan and oak. The site is also an important breeding ground for many species of birds, in particular the dotterel.

Jeudi 15 Octobre 2020 – Pas vraiment noir, ni blanc, ni gris d’ailleurs, enfin c’est entre gris clair et gris foncé.

It's not on the tourist trail, but I think it should be. Thousands flock to the nearby Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge but very few go to Cille Choirill Church or graveyard beyond. The setting is fantastic, remote, high above the River Spean, main A86 road , and railway, the area is surrounded by snow capped mountains. The small church is old, dating back to the 15th Century. It's a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Kerrill (Cyril) and might have been built by Cameron of Locheil who was a famous Highlander.

The burial ground rises to a summit, Celtic crosses abound, war graves too...........Seaforths, Cameron Highlanders.....1st Lovat Scouts and all manner of deaths of mere mortals: I saw a stone bearing "accidentally drowned". It is really interesting noting names, dates, ages, place of death, and other information cut into the stones. More than I have noticed in other burial grounds the ground is sunken into the graves or humped over old caskets. I certainly wouldn't dare to wander around here at night !

Pattack Falls is one of the smaller waterfalls , dropping perhaps barely over a metre as the River Pattack exits a short gorge near Kinloch Laggan. Water in the river flows west and eventually enters the sea at Loch Linnhe by Fort William, while a mile further east, the River Mashie is a tributary of the east-flowing River Spey. Given the proximity to the north-south watershed, its perhaps surprising that there’s a river of any significant size at all. The setting amongst pine forest is an attractive one, and the falls are a good place to take a quick break from the scenic A86 connecting the Cairngorms and West Highlands.
