The Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) is a medium-sized, highly distinctive heron with two color morphs: a dark morph with a reddish-brown head and neck and slate-gray body, and a less common white morph that is entirely white except for its grayish legs and bicolored bill. It is especially known for its active, erratic feeding behavior, running, jumping, wing-spreading, and dancing through shallow water to flush and catch small fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic prey. It inhabits shallow coastal lagoons, tidal flats, salt marshes, mangroves, and sandy shorelines, with its principal range along the southern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America, extending into northern South America; it is generally uncommon and is classified as Near Threatened due to coastal habitat loss and disturbance.
