At some point during my stint as an operator at Milwaukee Road's Tower A5 in the early 70's, I snagged a shot of this Burlington Northern detour, which appears to be the inbound North Coast Limited-Empire Builder-Morning Zephyr. Combining these trains at Minneapolis for the run into Chicago was common practice for the CB&Q/BN during this period.

This was taken on August 24th as we took the ferry from Farewell to Fogo (with a stop at Change Islands on the way) to begin my artist-in-residency. The weather could not have been nicer! I was so excited to be going there. I had such high expectations and I have to say that Fogo lived up to every last one of them.

The HAVw A5 Juggernaut was a massive, ten-wheeled combat vehicle produced by Kuat Drive Yards. It was used by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars, and the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War.
The A5 Juggernaut was driven by five sets of massive wheels, with large bump flexors providing shock support along with a flexible system of shocks and servos. However, the wheels lacked traction, and the use of independent drive units meant that the A5 lacked the maneuverability or the momentum to overcome certain rough or uneven terrains. The drive system was also awkward to operate, requiring precise coordination between the two pilots to keep the wheels in line during maneuvers to prevent locking the wheels up and immobilizing the vehicle. Juggernauts with damaged drive systems awaiting replacement parts could spend weeks waiting for repairs. A5 Juggernauts could reach a respectable speed of two hundred kilometers an hour in a straight line, but was slow to turn, dropping to a paltry twenty-five kilometers an hour.

Train #336, the eastbound Hiawatha, flies past the decommissioned Tower A5 behind a former Pepsi Can B32-8WH. Word on the street has it that rebuilt GP38-2s are on the way to replace the B32s in yard service at 14th Street.
Tower A5 opened in 1942 with an all-relay electric machine that replaced a 104-lever mechanical interlocking installed in 1899. It was located at the junction of the busy Chicago-Milwaukee and Chicago-Council Bluffs mainlines and the primarily industrial Bloomindale Line heading east towards Division Street/Goose Island.
During World War II, A5 saw as many as 200 trains a day. Almost all of the Milwaukee Road's passenger trains, the famed Hiawathas, commuter trains, and Union Pacific long-distance trains interchanged with the Milwaukee in Omaha, funneled through A5 on their final approach to Chicago well up until the formation of Amtrak in 1971. A few scheduled road freights, patrols, and Western Avenue and Division Street transfers were also regulars at A5.
The tower closed in 2015, the Bloomingdale Line was removed, and the interlocking was essentially split into three different control points. Today, Metra commuter trains, Hiawatha regional trains, the Empire Builder, and 3-4 regular freights continue to rumble through A5 on any given day.
