Fall in Sumpter Along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Baker County Oregon

Enjoying a beautiful fall drive along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway watching the fall foliage and a little wildlife in the Elkhorn Mountains of Eastern Oregon in the town of Sumpter, including a little hike exploring the Sumpter Dredge State Park.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge is the last of three built on the Powder River. Built in 1935, it ran until 1954. It dug up more than four million dollars worth of gold. The Dredge is located just a block off of the main street of the small historic mining town of Sumpter.

Visitors to the park can also try their luck at gold panning and explore the vast system of nature and interpretive trails that meander through the tailings left by the dredge as it worked it’s way up the river bed more than a half century ago.

The Elkhorn Scenic Byway is one of three Oregon scenic byways that connect in Baker County and is a spectacular scenic loop passing through the historic towns of Haines, Granite, Sumpter and Baker City as it meanders through the majestic Elkhorn Mountain range.

In the winter the road closes between Granite and Anthony Lakes Ski area and the area becomes a winter playground for skiers at Anthony Lakes and snowmobilers near the towns of Sumpter and Granite.

Introduction

I

Holding faith so long, now I see the light.

Experienced ups and downs, persecutions and hardships.

Happiness and sorrows, garment wet with tears.

Countless nights, stayed awake and prayed.

Rejected by the world; distanced by loved ones.

Wandering every day, having no resting place.

Freedom, just a sham, no human rights to share.

Deep hatred of Satan! When to right the wrong?

This world, dark and evil, I desire more the light of my life.

Christ is the truth, the way, and the life. I've made up my mind to follow Him.

This world, dark and evil, I desire more the light of my life.

Christ is the truth, the way, and the life. I've made up my mind to follow Him.

II

God struck the shepherds; a tribulation arose.

Dark clouds pressing down, terror everywhere.

Trapped in devil's hand, narrowly escaped from death.

Comforts of God's words, filled my heart with strength.

Suffered all torments, I know God is love.

God rules over everything, yet man's faith is poor.

Trial of fiery lake, I reap a lot from it.

I see through Satan, hate great red dragon.

Red dragon, mean and cruel, devoured and corrupted human souls.

Truth and life, not easy to get; I'll love God more to comfort His heart.

Red dragon, mean and cruel, devoured and corrupted human souls.

Truth and life, not easy to get; I'll love God more to comfort His heart.

III

Thinking of God's work, I feel God is kind.

Accepting God's judgment , disposition being changed.

Painful chastisement, I know more of God.

It is such an honor to follow practical God.

Spending for the true God, my heart feels comfort.

Faithfully having duty done, enjoying in bitterness.

Life's short, a blink of eye; loving God, most happy.

Blessed to serve God, I can't ask for more.

It's practical God who saves me. It's He who gives me a true life.

I have realized my long-cherished dream. I'll keep on running ahead.

I gave Moxie away yesterday. I am heartsick. But he weighs more than 7 pounds now and still has some growing to do, and Molly, still recovering and not eating well and therefore feeling weaker than she should, is back down to 4.5 pounds, and when they play, he has been hurting her or scaring her by jumping on top of her. He is by no means malicious or aggressive, just big and strong, and Molly is tiny and not strong. Through my vet’s vet tech, I found someone that Best Friends, the rescue center where I got Moxie, approved to take him into her household of two young cats and a dog. She picked him up yesterday and reported this morning that he is “doing great and is getting along well with everybody.”

I can’t stop crying, though. Please send along some hugs. I need them.

I mentioned in the previous description that the blog opened back up last weekend, but that’s only partially truthful – it refers only to posts that I personally have written. In case you missed it, my pal the singoil.blogspot.com/ Sing Oil Blogger dusted off the ol’ blog off and warmed it back up with a very special two-part contributor post last month! The subject matter was none other than the famed Disco Kroger in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, GA. Incidentally, I briefly covered that store myself in midsouthretail.blogspot.com/2022/11/broken-chain-zesto-pi... my previous last post, way back in November of last year; the Sing Oil Blogger built on that with his own coverage of the store while open, which was midsouthretail.blogspot.com/2023/05/kroger-259-atlanta-ga... published on my blog, as well as post-closure coverage from during the auction, which was singoil.blogspot.com/2023/05/disco-kroger-final-hours.html published over on his namesake blog. For all three parts of that trifecta, please feel free to check out the hyperlinks above!

We’ll resume our regularly scheduled flickr postings next time, so stick around…

India, Mumbai, Red Lotus.

For the Buddhists, Lotus symbolizes the most exalted state of man, his head held high, pure & undefiled in the sun, his feet rooted in the world of experience.

The lotus is one of Buddhism's best-recognized motifs & appears in all kinds of Buddhist art across all Buddhist cultures. Scrolling lotuses often embellish Buddhist textiles, ceramics & architecture.

Important Buddhist deities are associated in some manner with the lotus, seated upon either a lotus in full bloom or holding one in their hands. In some images of standing Buddhas rests each foot on a separate lotus.

The lotus does not grow in Tibet & so Tibetan art has only stylized versions of it, yet it appears frequently with Tibetan deities & among the Eight Auspicious Symbols.

The colour of the lotus has an important bearing on the symbolism associated with it;

White Lotus characterises the state of spiritual perfection & total mental purity.

Pink Lotus, the supreme lotus, generally reserved for the highest deity. Thus, naturally it is associated with the Great Buddha himself.

Red Lotus signifies the original nature purity of the heart. It is the lotus of love, compassion, passion all other qualities of the heart.

Blue Lotus is a symbol of the victory of the spirit over the senses & signifies the wisdom of knowledge.

Lotus is also an extreme resourceful plant, the flower, besides religious importance in Asia, adds to a beautiful decoration, the seeds & the stalks find use mainly in Asian cuisine & the leaves helps science for studies to produce water or dust resistant material.

It is rumoured that some are going down to the Eden Project to work as Shuttles and that the rest are to be scrapped. I hope to see them again in Leeds one day, I'm sure some would hate that!

I hate it when I let this much time pass between posting. I’ll be catching up with everyone today. I was tagged so here are some facts:

1.I love my DSLR, but I miss film…

2.If I could, I would live on the beach.

3.I’m studying for the GRE and I’m pretty confident with the verbal section, not so much the quantitative.

4.I’m selling my photos at redbubble; take a look!

5.Sorry about #4, I’ll probably hyperlink every photo for a while.

6.I’ve been listening to Iron and Wine a lot this summer.

7.Cormac McCarthy is the author whose books I’ve enjoyed the most recently.

8.My guilty pleasure is cheesy 1980s movies.

9.Caffeine is my drug of choice, and Starbucks is my main supplier.

10.I love the predictability of summer weather; hot days, followed by summer storms.

"One Concept of a Moon Base...such a facility lies far in the future"

Much much farther than we ever imagined.

There is NO SUCH THING as an excess of vintage moon base artist’s concepts, hence this posting.

Seriously, look at the exquisite detail throughout. For one, being bespectacled myself, appreciation for the depiction of the (likely) brilliant geologist or astrophysicist wearing glasses, with staff?/penetrometer?/drill?/sample collector? in hand.

And is that a Space Force shoulder patch?

The tripod-mounted camera? Television? Film? Note the crank. For film rewind, once the roll has been exposed?

Finally, for the geologists, check out those substantial talus slopes, center & right.

It's got it all!

Note the lunar lander ascending in the distance to the left. The vehicle configuration depicted might be a clue as to the contractor's identification, thereby narrowing down the artist’s identity? Roy Scarfo maybe? Although the mountains would seem to suggest otherwise. Convair/GD, John Sentovic? Nah. John Gorsuch? Ugh. USAF LUNEX?

Finally, check this out, same fellows...in a dramatically different setting...so cool:

Ripe with political satire, Hogan's Heroes ran for six popular seasons on CBS 1965-1971 following the hilarious exploits of a group of allied soldiers operating a secret intelligence operation behind enemy lines in a German POW camp during World War II. This MOC depicts a section of Stalag 13 from the show complete with German and Allied offices/living quarters, along with the extensive tunnel network built underneath the camp. 11 fully equipped rooms are modeled in detail depicting how these POWs operated. Included are numerous elements from the show's episodes.

NGC 5367 is a young open star cluster located in the constellation Centaurus. It lies at a distance of approximately 3,000 light-years from Earth. This cluster is relatively young, with an estimated 1-2 million years of age.

NGC 5367 is notable for its rich population of young, hot stars, which are responsible for illuminating the surrounding nebula. The cluster is embedded within a diffuse emission nebula known as the NGC 5367 Nebula or Caldwell 46. This nebula is characterized by its glowing gas and dust, which is ionized by the intense radiation emitted by the young stars within the cluster.

The NGC 5367 cluster and its associated nebula provide an excellent laboratory for studying the star formation processes and the interaction between newly formed stars and the surrounding interstellar medium. It is a popular target for amateur astronomers and astrophotographers due to its striking appearance and relative accessibility in the southern skies.
