In the fall of 2019 we drove north to Banff and other Canadian provinces stopping off along the way to visit friends and places of interest. This photograph was taken at the Chihuly Arden and Glass museum in Seattle. A wonderful place to visit.
It is a colorful evening along the River Subdivision but there is not too much traffic. Some track work and inspections halted traffic after the eastbound Empire Builder traveled through earlier in the day. Regardless, the sumac along the Mississippi River provided some nice red and yellow colors to compliment the CP AC4400 leading a westbound manifest towards Saint Paul.
A MACe lead the H-SIOBAR down the Sioux Line, on the Creston Sub to Lincoln, and down the Saint Joe Sub to KC. It stopped in Lincoln at 44th Street, seen here.
Although it may be a Union Pacific locomotive in the computer system, UP 1124 is a proud Southern Pacific veteran in every other regard. Leading Portland Subdivision local YBA55, 1124 drags outbound cars from North Portland industries back to Barnes Yard. It took me three separate trips to Portland to finally pull off this shot the way I wanted to. After spying this scene from the side of the road during my first visit, I immediately envisioned shooting 1124 passing through this gritty urban landscape. It wouldn’t end up happening though, as the unit was shopped for its 90-day almost immediately upon my arrival in town. I didn’t fare much better on my second visit to Portland, with 1124 facing the wrong way to make the shot happen. A year later on my third visit, everything lined up just as I wanted, and I walked away triumphantly with a shot over a year in the making. Portland, OR, 6/10/2024.
