This gopher snake was reported by one of our park visitors where I work, so it got collected by one of our rangers. I'm not gonna lie - I've never touched a snake, or even a lizard for that matter. But my childhood fears have eased up as I gain more knowledge and respect for all living things. Having someone knowledgeable around helps too. So I did touch and feel - it was amazing. Then we took it to a more wild area of the park and let it go. Picture time with my little camera I leave in the gatehouse. This gal - yes, another coworker has her own pet snakes and can tell the sex - got measured at 56 inches before we let her go.
From Wikipedia: A large non-venomous colubrid snake ... Pacific gopher snakes are one of California's most common snake species. They often get confused for rattlesnakes because they mimic similar patterns and defense mechanisms.
