Burlington Northern SD70MACs once were the mainstay of BN's coal trains in the 1990's once they vanquished the C30-7 and SD40-2 fleet.
And then came BNSF and their orange GEVOs. Plus, the gubmint killed off coal.
A mad one shot move made with minutes to spare was worth it for a pair of clean orange 90s seen here approaching Wandel passing the 'mounds' - a shot only possible for a couple of weeks or so a year due to encrouching shadows. Thanks to the top driver at the helm!
My longest running friend (we first met when we were three) emailed me the other day suggesting I did a tribute piece to the band we made when we were about 10. The band was called "Groove" and mainly consisted of singing along to pre-recorded beats on my mini Yamaha keyboard, recording them on our cassette machine, then forcing my younger sister to buy them for real pocket monies... The lyrics featuring in this piece were to the tune of that 90s classic, "venus"...
The view from the County Highway 10 overpass in Galesburg was (and is) a pretty cool place to shoot the yard activity.
In 1996, a pair of former Burlington Northern SD9s were assigned to pull-down duty and could be easily photographed as they scurried around.
Seeing an NPZ unit in its original livery always gives me a bit of a 90s flashback - I used to take these trains daily to go to school in the 90s. Smoking was still allowed in about half of the train, which usually smelled like weed when students were on the train. In the earily days they sometimes still brough along the occasional freight car, which was then uncoupled and left behind at some station on the way, and mail delivery using the freight compartments of the EMUs was still a thing.
Meanwhile most of the units have been converted to Domino units with new low-floor coaches, and look a bit boring, like most of the SBB fleet. However, between Neuchâtel and Pontarlier some original units remain, because changing any of that would have required a lengthy process to reapprove the trains to run on the french network. In 2019 these units were used for a few daily RegioExpress services.
