Red Feathers 9/11 - Painful Memories by Daniel Arrhakis (2021)

Remembering September 11 attacks, also commonly referred to as 9/11, twenty years after the tragedy ... the memories are even more painful in a world increasingly torn by religious, political and ideological extremism.

Radicalization now transposes to social networks making external threats as dangerous as internal ones, dividing peoples and threatening from within the Democracies around the world.

Religious radicalism rides on the power of world domination but also fascism and the nationalist extreme right gallop fear, doubt and the social conscience of the peoples.

Only unity, tolerance and cooperation among peoples will be able to overcome fear and mistrust through courage, knowledge and love.

Never forget those who lost their lives.

I first visited the World Trade Center as a kid on a class trip - where went to the top of one of the towers. I had visited the World Trade Center site several times after 9-11 but it was always under construction and difficult to move around. It was my first time to go now that it is nearly rebuilt - its amazing to see what they've done given the carnage.

Very crowded there yesterday

The beauty of the Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial, dedicated to the people of New Jersey who were murdered on this day, is tempered by the volume of names carved into the walls. Never forget them or the families that are hurting today.

I spent the day on the hop on hop off bus and had a good look around New York. I catch my flight back to New Zealand today.

While enjoying a fall like morning at a cafe, it occurred to us that it's 9/11...I'm shocked we actually forgot. I don't feel like I've seen much on the news either...have we all just moved on? I can never forget that day and what I have witnessed first hand living in NYC at the time...

19 years ago I was awakened by a crisis. Today we face another crisis. Our Mayor eased the lockdown restrictions allowing people to go to the beaches alone. With that limited freedom, I captured the 9/11 sunrise from a familiar location. Aloha.

In 2014 I visited the 9/11 memorial at the site of the former twin towers. If you have never been I would recommend the visit. It's definitely a place of high emotional impact. The fountains spill water into the former footprints of the towers. The falling water was very suggestive of the collapsing towers and the victims they brought with them

Like many people I remember where I was when I first heard about the attacks. The impact to the world was huge, I met many people who knew people who lost their lives. Many more who counted themselves lucky as they often visited the towers for business.

Canada rose to the occasion by hosting flights that had to set down from Canadian airspace. Many people know of how the residents of Gander responded by taking people into their homes. Closer to where I live now, emergency services went into high alert and waited to be called in to help with survivors, In Kingston Ontario hundreds of local residents spontaneously gathered at the General Hospital to donate blood in case American victims of the terrorist attacks were in need of. All of this despite the border and being a 6+ hour drive away.

An unimaginable cruel tragedy that I hope is never repeated anywhere,

"Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11."

- President Obama

What separates us from the animals, what separates us from the chaos, is our ability to mourn people we’ve never met.

Such...hallowed ground, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum was high on our list to see during our little family trip to NYC. An incredibly moving experience...and the museum is not to be missed. Take a moment today to remember those that passed.

I asked them to stand still for the long exposure shot but the crowd would not cooperate. :)

For weeks after the Towers fell, there were funerals at the church around the corner from my home. This one was for a fellow Fireman.

For today's 9/11 issue, our Life Editor wrote a story. It ran lead story centerpiece this morning.

I remember i was in Chemistry when our principal came on over the PA system to tell us what happened. Then we watched the news broadcast on TV all next period during french class, and that's when we watched the 2nd plane hit.

Everyone in my parent's generation talks about how they knew exactly when and where they were when they heard JFK was shot. I think this is the equivalent for our generation.
