In 1987, Detroit & Mackinac Railway owner Straits Corporation acquired the former Grand Trunk Western lines between Durand and Bay City, Bay City and Midland, and Durand and Muskegon. To operate these lines, a new railroad was formed, the Central Michigan (reporting marks CMGN). Initially operating with leased GTW GP9s and EMD switchers, the new railroad soon set out to purchase its own motive power. Despite the fact that the D&M had long relied on Alco power, the new railroad would strike a deal with used locomotive dealer Helm Leasing for 4 former B&O GP40s. These locomotives were extensively rebuilt by Mid America Car Company, losing their turbochargers and having their original DC generators replaced with AR10 alternators. When complete, the now-2,000 horsepower locomotives were designated GP38AC. The 4 units became CMGN 8801-8804, numbered for the year (1988) and month they arrived on the railroad. For the horn nuts, these units had fantastic old cast P5s. They would become the most reliable units on the railroad, with 8802 and 8804 surviving through the RailAmerica purchase and merger with nearby Huron & Eastern in 2004 and into the post-2013 G&W era. 8804 would be the last GP38AC on the HESR, being rebuilt (poorly) into a GP38-3 and becoming G&W Orange HESR #2026. The locomotive was recently shipped to MEI in East St Louis for rebuilding yet again, and is expected to go to a G&W property in Canada when complete. Sitting outside the Bay City shop in September of 1990, #8804 was lensed by Gordon L Loyd. A scanned slide from my collection.
